Christopher left with Nicole and Alfred for the conference room, and not once did he look at Amelia.
It was as if they were strangers who had never known each other. Maybe he hadn’t even noticed she was there. But even if he had, he wouldn’t have spared her a glance.
That was the truth of what they had become. Strangers.
And that was exactly why everyone knew Christopher was married, yet no one had ever known who his wife was.
“You alright?” Jasper asked quietly when he caught the shadow on her face.
Amelia shook her head. “I’m fine.”
She wasn’t surprised anymore. Not by this.
Jasper didn’t press. He had known her for years and understood her nature. Amelia was resilient. Once she set her mind on something, she never wavered. Whether it was love or career, she gave herself completely.
When she loved, she loved to the extreme. She could give up everything, lose herself entirely, just to pour her whole heart into it.
She had loved Christopher that way. Even after realizing Nathan was Nicole’s child, she had been willing to raise him as her own. She would sacrifice anything for what her heart told her was right. Her devotion always went to the very edge.
And that was why she had fallen so hard in her past life, and why the cost had been so unbearable. Her daughter’s life had been the price before Amelia finally woke up.
She understood too late that loving a man who didn’t love her back meant that no matter how much she gave, it was all for nothing. Loving without limits could only end in tragedy.
“Jasper.”
Edmund’s voice broke the silence as he beckoned Jasper over. “I heard the institute’s project was handed to you. How’s the recruiting coming along?”
Jasper nodded and led Amelia in that direction.
Edmund gave her a once-over. “And this is?”
“My junior, Amelia,” Jasper said. “She’s also Sophia, the one who designed the Eos X7 back then. She’s brilliant at programming and design. From development to execution, she can handle it all on her own.”
Edmund blinked in surprise.
Of course, he had heard of the name Sophia. Back then, it had been all the rage in the industry, and Alfred had taken her in as an apprentice. However, she suddenly vanished from the scene for reasons that no one ever
knew.
The last time her name surfaced was during the ISSDC competition, when the CEO of Navitech had tried to corner her backstage. But word was he didn’t manage to catch her.

What Edmund hadn’t expected was that Sophia would turn out to be such a young woman.
He had admired her talent from afar. Back then, he had wanted to take her under his wing himself, but he’d never managed to meet her before Alfred snatched her up first.
“At last, I get to meet the real person,” Edmund said with a smile. “Your reputation precedes you.”
Amelia returned his smile politely. “You flatter me, Mr. Caldwell.”
She was a rising star in the field. Technology moved fast, and the industry always needed fresh talent. The younger generation’s designs and ideas often outshone those of their predecessors.
When combined with the experience and perspective of the older generation, it sparked entirely new innovations.
Edmund struck up a conversation with Amelia. When he learned she was currently at Nova Nine Technologies, he frowned-as if her talent was being wasted.
Jasper teased, “Mr. Caldwell, why are you trying to steal my people the moment you see them?”
“Talent belongs to the country,” Edmund said smoothly, his gaze steady on Amelia. “Have you considered coming to my institute?”
Amelia smiled politely. “Thank you for thinking so highly of me. But honestly, I’ve been away from the field for years. My credentials aren’t enough right now, and I still need time to learn and grow. I’d only slow you down if I
came in as I am.”
And she meant it. She knew her foundation needed strengthening. She wanted to move forward step by step, solid and steady.
Serving the nation was no easy task. Every person inside those halls was a top-tier talent with impressive degrees and backgrounds.
How could she walk in unprepared?
Edmund’s admiration for her was genuine, and so was his desire to bring her on board.
