Chapter 58

Nicole’s mind went completely blank. Without a second thought, she lunged forward, putting herself in front of Amelia and Evelyn.

The bullet scraped violently along her arm.

Amelia’s first instinct was to shield Evelyn. A sharp, searing pain shot through her wrist. When she looked up, she saw Nicole standing in front of them.

A hiss escaped Nicole’s lips as blood instantly splattered from her arm.

Nathan froze.

The other kids hadn’t been hurt that badly before, but this time he had aimed too hard, and Nicole had actually been seriously injured.

Fear overtook him, and with a snap, he dropped the controller.

Christopher frowned deeply. “Go to the infirmary and get a doctor to bandage that.”

Nicole shook her arm lightly. “It’s fine. Just a scratch. Tough guys aren’t that delicate.”

Christopher’s gaze was icy as he looked at Amelia. “So this is the fine son you raised.”

Amelia almost laughed.

Her fine son? Really?

“Mommy, I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to,” Nathan wailed, tears streaming down his face.

That small, desperate cry of “Mommy” made it impossible to tell who he was addressing.

He sobbed toward Christopher, his voice choking between cries. “Daddy, I was wrong. I’ll never do it again.”

He was crying, tears blurring his vision. At this moment, his apology seemed genuinely heartfelt.

Christopher’s tone hardened for the first time as he looked at Nathan. “Who told you to bring something like that to school?”

Nathan’s voice trembled with sobs. “I-I was just… Mommy said I could play however I want.”

Nicole pressed her lips together and stayed silent.

Christopher’s gaze flicked briefly to Amelia, unreadable, but she understood. He was blaming her for not keeping

Nathan in check.

But Nathan didn’t belong to her anymore.

The “Mommy” Nathan was referring to was Nicole, not her.

Amelia took a deep breath, wincing as the pain in her wrist flared, and said, “Christopher, Nathan’s mother—”

‘Nathan’s mother isn’t me.’

Before she could finish, another parent’s sharp voice cut her off.

“We don’t want to watch you argue! You’re the parents, and you need to take responsibility for your child’s behavior! Many of the children are hurt. How are you going to handle this?”

Nicole lowered her gaze. “Chris, this is my fault. I shouldn’t have let Nate play with something so dangerous. I thought he knew his limits.”

Christopher didn’t respond. Instead, he turned to his assistant.

“Contact the hospital to assess the injuries of the children. Let the legal department handle any compensation

based on the findings.” Then, he looked back at the parents, his tone calm and measured. “If there are any further issues, contact my assistant to handle them.”

Once the children at the scene were taken care of, Christopher looked at Nicole.

“Come with me to the hospital to get this treated.”

He didn’t spare a glance for Amelia-not once.

If he had looked, he would have seen her injuries too. Or maybe he did see and chose to ignore them. After all, he didn’t love her. Why would he care?

In his eyes, if anything went wrong, it was always Amelia’s fault.

Nathan pressed his lips together and followed them silently.

Christopher had handled the situation thoroughly enough that no parent dared to push further.

Amelia drew in a deep breath and turned to Christine. “You saw that, right? From now on, if Nathan causes any trouble, go to his parents. Those two just now are them.”

Christine paused, realization dawning. It turned out the couple hadn’t just been having arguments. Amelia’s husband had found someone else, and they were divorced.

“I-I understand now. I’m sorry.”
