Chapter 59
A bullet had struck Amelia’s wrist dead-on, sending sharp waves of pain through her arm.
A fine sheen of sweat appeared on her forehead. “I’m fine.”
Evelyn’s eyes welled up, tears threatening to spill as panic overtook her.
Christine’s face went pale. “This is way worse than what happened with Nathan’s mother! Why didn’t you say anything earlier? You need to get to a hospital immediately!”
Blood ran freely from Amelia’s wound, shocking to anyone who saw it.
She couldn’t drive herself with an injury like this, so taking a taxi was the only option.
Evelyn sobbed helplessly, her small hands wringing together as she fretted over Amelia. “We should call 911. Does it hurt, Mommy?”
“Amelia!” Jasper’s voice came from the school gate.
He had followed her after receiving her leave request, unable to shake the worry. He never expected to see this
scene.
“What happened to your hand? It’s bad,” Jasper said, brows knitting with concern. “I’m taking you to the hospital. We can’t let it get infected.”
He was relieved that he had come.
Amelia was diligent and responsible, so she wouldn’t leave work lightly if it weren’t serious. The fact that she had left in such a rush proved that something urgent had happened.
And now, it was clear that his suspicion had been right.
At the emergency room, the doctors worked quickly to treat Amelia’s wound. The process was brutal; the pain of having the skin pulled and stitched made her face pale.
Evelyn stood nearby, terrified of the blood but trying to comfort her mother.
Jasper leaned down and tucked Evelyn’s little head against his chest.
“Don’t look, sweetie.”
Once the wound was cleaned and stitched, the doctor advised, “To prevent infection, it’s best to get a tetanus shot.

Amelia nodded. Better safe than sorry.
The doctor warned, “Be more careful when the kids are playing. That shot nearly hit a major artery. If it had, the consequences could have been disastrous.”
After leaving the hospital, Jasper drove Amelia and Evelyn home.
Evelyn sat in the back seat, probably a little tired. Once in the car, she clutched Amelia’s hand. Her face was tight with worry, and she fell asleep before anyone realized.
After hearing the full story, Jasper couldn’t hide his anger.

“He just left you like that and walked away?!” He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. “How could you live with someone like that for so long?”
Amelia turned her head. The car window was down, letting in the warm early summer air.
Her expression was unreadable.
She had already experienced Christopher’s indifference thoroughly in her past life. This time, she wasn’t surprised at all.
In Christopher’s eyes, everything was her fault. She hadn’t taught Nathan properly. And Nicole, who had made the toy for Nathan, had done nothing wrong.
After a long silence, she let out a bitter, mocking laugh.
“You’re right. How could I have been so foolish before?”
“Weren’t you planning on getting a divorce?” Jasper’s eyes darkened, tinged with concern.
Amelia suddenly asked, “Is Mr. Nelson free tonight? I want to take him out for dinner and talk about my divorce appeal.”
Jasper nodded. “I’ll call and set it up for you. What about Evie?”
Amelia glanced at her daughter’s sleeping face. Evelyn’s little cheeks were pale, still marked with dried tears.
The guilt in Amelia’s chest grew heavier. She felt she had always failed Evelyn, given her too little time and too many disappointments.
She took a deep breath. “Let’s take her home first. I’ll have my mother watch her there.”
Just then, her phone buzzed.
She frowned slightly and glanced down.
It was a message from Christopher, which included a location link.
[Nikki got hurt saving you. Aren’t you going to see how she’s doing?]
