Chapter 60

Amelia stared at the message on her phone and let out a cold, derisive laugh.

Christopher sure knew how to care for Nicole, as if she could never face even the slightest injustice.

If he hadn’t sent that message, Amelia might have completely forgotten that he even existed in her contacts.

She didn’t reply. Without a second thought, she deleted the message and blocked him.

Since he refused to sign the divorce papers, she had no reason to wait for his calls or messages. There was no reason to keep him around just to cause trouble.

As the saying went-out of sight, out of mind.

After dropping Evelyn off, Amelia went to meet Cyrus Nelson.

Cyrus was a senior attorney who normally didn’t take civil divorce cases. However, because Jasper had introduced her, he was happy to help.

They had arranged to meet at the club.

When Amelia arrived, Cyrus was already there.

“Sorry I’m a bit late,” she said.

Cyrus gave Amelia a gentle, courteous smile as he stood and extended his hand. “Hello, I’m Cyrus Nelson.”

He was polished, courteous, and undeniably gentlemanly.

After Amelia shook his hand, Cyrus invited her to sit and get straight to business. He was highly competent, able to cut to the core of the matter after listening to just a brief explanation.

“Leave this matter to me from here on,” he said.

He remained calm and composed, his brow never furrowing once. It was as if this whole matter didn’t even register as an issue to him.

Amelia had initially felt a flicker of unease. Now she relaxed, letting the tension drain from her shoulders.

“If there’s anything you need me to do, just let me know,” she said.

“Of course,” Cyrus replied, his tone gentle yet carrying an intangible coolness, a presence that seemed to place an invisible barrier between them and the rest of the world.

His gaze flicked over her bandaged wrist. “Does he also hurt you at home?”

He had wanted to ask this from the start, but through the entire conversation, Amelia hadn’t mentioned it.

Amelia was surprised, then she pulled her arm back. “No. This was an accident.”

Cyrus nodded. “Let me know if anything comes up. Every detail helps when filing for a case.”

Filing for divorce required meeting certain conditions. Either the marriage had to be irretrievably broken with a separation of two years or more, or the husband’s infidelity had to involve bigamy or similar violations.

All of these required a complete chain of evidence, which needed Amelia’s cooperation.

She had already prepared everything. The moment she handed Christopher the divorce papers, she had a backup

plan ready. She had never been the type to sit back and wait for things to happen.

Cyrus glanced at his watch and stood. “I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll leave for now. Contact me if anything comes up.”

After he left, Amelia let out a slow, steady breath.

Jasper looked at her. “Still nervous? He’s just like that, the kind that doesn’t seem easy to get along with.”

Amelia understood. Big personalities always had their quirks. Cyrus was from Southwick, and his family wielded considerable influence there. Being a lawyer was just a personal hobby of his.

“Have you eaten enough? I can take you for a bite more,” Jasper offered.

Amelia shook her head. “I’m worried about Evie. I want to go back and check on her.”

Evelyn had surely been shaken today. Even if she was asleep now, Amelia wanted to be there when she woke to reassure her.

Jasper glanced at her. “Your hand’s injured. I can give you a few days off. Let it heal before you come back to work.”

Amelia stood, a faint smile on her lips.

“No need. It’s just a hand injury, not a broken arm. I’ll report to work as usual tomorrow. I’ll just grab a cab back. We’re not headed the same way,” she said, glancing at Jasper. “Thanks for today. See you tomorrow.”

Jasper watched her walk away.

Her small frame was upright and unyielding, a clear reflection of the indomitable pride in her bones. She wouldn’t admit it aloud, but after being looked down on at the office today, he knew she must be silently simmering with frustration.

Soon, Amelia arrived home.
