Chapter 61

Claire had already prepared the meal at home, and the aroma filled the entire house.

“Is Evie still asleep?” Amelia asked.

Claire nodded. “Yes.”

As Claire looked up, she noticed the bandages around Amelia’s wrist. “What happened to your hand?”

“It’s nothing,” Amelia said, pursing her lips. “Just a little accident.”

Claire frowned; a thought flickered in her mind, but she ultimately kept it to herself. She loosened her apron and said, “I won’t stay for dinner. I still have things to take care of at the office.”

Amelia hesitated, studying her mother’s expression. “Do you need me to help?”

“Take care of yourself,” Claire said, turning on her heel and leaving in a rush, clearly in a hurry.

Amelia watched her mother’s retreating figure, her brow furrowing slightly. She didn’t dwell on it, thinking it was just an ordinary matter.

The company was always in a state of upheaval, so being busy with work was normal.

Perhaps Amelia shouldn’t constantly ask her mother to watch over Evelyn. No one’s life in modern society was simple.

Besides, Claire was already entangled in her own battles with Jonathan, embroiled in divorce disputes that never seemed to end.

Back at Harbor Villa, Christopher returned with Nathan.

Along the way, Nanan remained silent, none of his usual liveliness showing. He knew he had gotten himself into serious trouble today.

Christopher’s expression was cold.

When Anna saw them return, she immediately went to help them take off their shoes.

These were the moments Amelia used to handle. She would help him with his tie and hand him a warm cup of tea.

Christopher lifted a hand, tugging lightly at his tie. “Where’s Amelia?”

Anna pursed her lips. “She hasn’t returned. Right, she did come back one night. Seemed like she was looking for something, but didn’t find it.”

Christopher hummed, paying no real attention to what Amelia might have been searching for.

He lowered his gaze and looked at Nathan coolly, “Tomorrow, go to school and apologize to Evie and all the other kids.”

Nathan kept his head down.

But Nicole said he hadn’t done anything wrong. Why should he apologize?

He bit his lower lip, staying silent, his brows tightly furrowed, clearly displeased.

Normally, Christopher spoiled and indulged him. This sudden seriousness and sternness could only mean that Amelia had gone and badmouthed him to his father. Probably tattled on him, too!

Maybe she would even punish him when she came back.

Right now, Nathan thought it would be great if Amelia never came back!

But Christopher was serious now, even fierce. Deep down, Nathan was terrified.

“I understand,” he said softly, his voice low and weak.

Better to agree for now. If he didn’t apologize, Christopher wouldn’t know anyway.

The next day, Amelia followed her usual routine, dropping Evelyn off at kindergarten before heading to Nova Nine Technologies.

Her wrist was still sore, so she couldn’t drive. She squeezed onto the subway and rushed to the office, arriving a full minute late again.

Everyone had already been critical of her, and now they were even more convinced she was incompetent and still trying to get special treatment.

All eyes were sharply fixed on her.

Josephine’s face darkened as she scoffed, “Just waiting for you to start the meeting. Work officially starts at nine, and you really have the nerve to show up right on the dot? You contribute nothing, and yet everyone has to wait for you to start.”

Amelia pressed her lips together. “Sorry, I was late dropping off my child.”

Josephine wasn’t one for sympathy. She looked at Amelia’s bandaged hand,

“You left early yesterday because of the kid, right? Your hand’s injured, and you still came into the office? You should have just taken the day off.

“If you can’t take care of your own child at home and drag everyone down at work, don’t think your injuries and motherhood make you special. Society may sympathize with mothers, but no one here is running a charity. Being a mother isn’t a shield for you.

“Don’t mess things up for everyone. We’re all trying to meet deadlines and stay on schedule, unlike you, who’s just coasting along behind the scenes.”
