Chapter 64
Amelia knew the man.
He was Christopher’s chief assistant, Nigel Larkin. He was also the only person at the company who knew about their marriage.
Amelia frowned and glanced in a certain direction to see a Maybach parked under the shade of a nearby tree. At the entrance of the elite kindergarten, among all the luxury cars, Christopher’s was relatively low-key.
She could probably guess why he had come to fetch her. Apart from seeking justice for Nicole, she couldn’t think of any other reason for him to make such a show of it.
Amelia had no intention of acknowledging him.
But Nigel stood firm, blocking the way without budging. He had no intention of letting them pass.
Evelyn furrowed her brow, glaring at Nigel with pure disgust in her eyes.
Amelia’s expression hardened. “Are you planning to break the law and force us into the car?”
Nigel remained calm. “I wouldn’t dare. I’m just asking you to get in, Mrs. Zephyr. Mr. Zephyr said he knows where the thing you’re looking for is.”
After a while, Amelia reached for the rear door.
Nigel stepped forward and opened the front passenger door for her. “After you, Mrs. Zephyr.”
Amelia took a deep breath and helped Evelyn settle into the back seat. She hadn’t expected that Christopher would be driving himself today.
Nathan slouched in the back seat, his expression sulky, clearly still stewing over being scolded.
When he saw Evelyn get in, he turned his head away and didn’t say a word. Evelyn didn’t bother with him, either.
Christopher sat behind the wheel, one hand casually draped over it, his gaze cool and unreadable as he looked at Amelia.
“Tomorrow is the old man’s birthday. You’re coming with me to the dinner.”
His tone was calm, almost emotionless, but every word carried command and authority.
“I’ll take you to pick out a dress,” he added.
Sure enough, people only remembered her when something mattered. Christopher only remembered that she was his wife when a problem came up.
Amelia stared at him. “Where are my things?”
“The brooch?” Christopher replied. “If you come to the dinner with me, I’ll give it to you.”
He had a knack for finding people’s weaknesses and pressing just the right buttons.
Amelia refused to give in. “It’s not yours. Are you planning to steal it?”
“Steal?” Christopher’s lips curled upwards, a hint of amusement in his eyes. “That brooch is a man’s. Your grandmother gave it to me when we got married. It’s always been mine.”

Amelia closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Years ago, Adelaide had been pleased about Amelia marrying into the Zephyr family and had indeed meant for the brooch to go to Christopher. Amelia had loved Christopher once, deeply, with every fiber of her being. Naturally, she followed his every word.
But he had never worn that brooch, which meant he didn’t care for it.
And yet, it was the only keepsake Adelaide had left behind.
Amelia clenched her hand, conceding for the sake of her grandmother’s keepsake. “Just this once.”
Christopher calmly turned away, paying no attention to her inexplicable emotions and attitude.
“Nate, what did I tell you at home?” Christopher asked, his eyes fixed on Nathan through the rearview mirror.
Nathan clenched his small fists, glancing at Evelyn with a face full of reluctance, his voice barely audible. “I’m
sorry…

“Louder.”
Nathan took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, Evie. I shouldn’t have bullied you at kindergarten.”
Evelyn just stared at him, offering no response.
“Aren’t going to say anything?” Nathan pressed his lips together. “I already said sorry! You should say it’s okay.”
Evelyn tilted her head. “But I have the right not to forgive you. Just because you say sorry doesn’t mean I have to.”
Nathan froze, his fists clenching tighter. He had already apologized! What more did she want? Besides, he hadn’t done it on purpose.
Amelia reached to open the car door, intending to step out, but it was locked tight.
