Chapter 66

The next day, Amelia didn’t go to Nova Nine Technologies. Instead, she decided to find a dress for the birthday banquet.

She had already turned down Christopher’s offer to shop together. Right now, she didn’t want to spend another minute with him.

She hailed a cab and headed to a boutique.

Inside, she wandered through the racks. The selection was endless, and the more she looked, the more overwhelming it became.

In the end, she settled on a pale-colored mermaid gown.

She reached out to take it, but another hand suddenly slid in from the side. Both of them gripped the dress at the same time.

Amelia looked up and locked eyes with Nicole.

Nicole froze for a second, then her eyes widened in surprise when she saw Amelia. “What a coincidence, Mia! You like this one, too? I think it’s gorgeous. I really like it.”

It was obvious she wanted to compete with Amelia.

Amelia thought Nicole’s shamelessness truly knew no bounds.

No matter how ugly things had gotten between them or how many cold stares they had exchanged, Nicole always acted as if nothing had happened whenever they met again. She would always greet Amelia with a bright smile.

Amelia had to admit that her shameless resilience was impressive.

Her eyes flicked briefly to Christopher.

Nicole wanted to steal her man, and now she wanted to steal her dress too. Amelia could let go of the man, but not

the dress.

Amelia’s lips curved into a slow, faint smile. “I’m afraid this dress just doesn’t suit you.”

Nicole’s smile faltered. The gown was flattering, but it took a certain figure to truly pull it off. Her chest couldn’t compare to Amelia’s, though the rest wasn’t far behind.

“Why don’t you pick another one?”

A man’s voice cut in from behind them, low and cold, laced with command.

Amelia’s breath caught in her throat. That voice was very familiar. She didn’t even need to look to know Christopher was speaking to her.

“Let Mia have it,” Nicole said; she put on a show of being gracious, lifting the dress and holding it out like a gift.

However, Amelia didn’t take it. The gown slipped from Nicole’s hands and hit the floor with a sharp thud.

“Why” Nicole began.

Amelia’s expression stayed cold, giving not an inch of courtesy. “Forget it. I don’t want something that’s already been touched by another woman.”

Every word was laced with bite, her disdain cutting through the air.

She wasn’t about to accept charity, especially not from Nicole.

Nicole froze, stunned by how blunt the rejection was, laced with barbed sarcasm on top of it. Her eyes darted to Christopher.

“Chris, look at the way Mia’s acting…’

“Show her some respect. Don’t forget what you’re after,” Christopher said calmly.

Amelia laughed bitterly inside. Every time she turned her coldness on Nicole, he stepped in to shield her. And now, he was using Amelia’s grandmother’s keepsake as a means of leverage.

She clenched her fists quietly.

Christopher finally turned away and looked at Nicole instead. “If you like it, go try it on.”

Nicole smiled brightly, unbothered by the earlier incident. “Well, I suppose it’s better to take what’s offered than to refuse.”

With that, she picked up the gown and carried it toward the fitting room.

The sales assistant hurried after Nicole to help her change.

Amelia drew in a deep breath. The more she thought about it, the more those years of loving Christopher felt like a complete waste.

How could she have been so blind in her past life?

How willingly she had settled into being a housewife, shut away at home! She had known nothing about the world outside. Not until her daughter paid with her life did she finally wake up.

She forced all those emotions down, locking them away.

Then she turned and picked another gown, preparing to head for the fitting room.

Christopher’s eyes flicked to the dress in her hands.

The dress was daring-low back, plunging neckline. It was the kind of gown that left nothing to the imagination, showcasing every curve of a woman’s figure.

He rose from his seat and plucked it right out of her grasp.

Amelia frowned, her patience gone. “What is wrong with you?”

Christopher met her gaze. “You really think that kind of dress is appropriate for Grandpa’s birthday banquet?”

Amelia almost laughed.

To her, attending the banquet was nothing more than a task to get through. There was none of the old excitement she once felt.
