After the banquet, all Amelia wanted was to take back her grandmother’s keepsake. Nothing else mattered.

Christopher said nothing. His eyes swept over the endless rows of gowns. Then, without much thought, he picked out a dress and tossed it to her. “Try this.”

The dress was elegant and refined.

Amelia lowered her gaze to it, unmoved. She had no interest in humoring him.

“No need,” she said coolly. “Just have it wrapped up.”

She didn’t care whether it looked good or not.

“Amelia.” Christopher’s dark eyes locked on her. “What exactly are you sulking about?”

His patience had limits. When it came to her, it was close to nonexistent.

She met his gaze. “Where’s the thing I asked for?”

“With that attitude, do you really want it?”

Amelia drew in a slow breath, forcing her temper down again.

If it weren’t for what she wanted, she would never be putting up with this.

She snatched the dress from his hand and disappeared into the fitting room.

Inside the fitting room, the sales assistant’s voice next door carried loudly.

“Oh! Mrs. Zephyr, this dress fits you perfectly.”

Nicole paused, then smiled. “Does it?”

The sales assistant beamed and gushed, “That butterfly tattoo on your back matches Mr. Zephyr’s wrist. You two have a couple’s set! It looks amazing and lifelike. Honestly, you couldn’t look more perfect together.”

Amelia froze, and her grip on the dress tightened almost imperceptibly.

She knew there was a butterfly tattoo on Christopher’s wrist. It was a faint shade of blue, barely noticeable unless one was looking for it.

She had asked him about it once, but he never answered.

Now, she knew why. It wasn’t that he didn’t have an answer. It was that he couldn’t admit the truth—that it was a matching tattoo with Nicole.

What could he possibly have said to his wife?

She lowered her gaze, her heart twisting tight in her chest.

If the two of them had been childhood sweethearts who were inseparable since they were young, why had he married Amelia at all?

Even if that one reckless night had happened, he could have refused.

Amelia drew in a shaky breath, the desire to try on the dress gone. She pushed open the fitting room door, only to run straight into Nicole coming out in her gown.

Nicole paused, her expression flickering.

“Mia? Did you hear all that?” She hurried forward, smiling as she explained, “Mia, please don’t misunderstand. Chris and I got that tattoo when we were kids. It’s not a couple’s tattoo. It’s a sibling-style one. If it really were a couple’s tattoo, Chris and I would’ve been married ages ago.”

Amelia said nothing. She had prepared herself for this long ago. She knew what they were to each other- childhood sweethearts.

But seeing it laid bare like this, Amelia still felt as if her body had turned to lead. Every step was heavy. Her chest ached, as though an invisible hand had clutched her heart and refused to let go, squeezing until the pain spread sharp and relentless.

When love was betrayed, it was never easy to simply let go.

Amelia remembered once suggesting that Christopher remove his tattoo and get a new matching one with her instead.

However, he had refused.

At the time, she thought it was because he had outgrown such things. Now she finally understood the truth. That tattoo had never been meaningless.

Amelia drew in a deep breath; her fingers, clenched tight around the dress, slowly loosened.

“Mia, why aren’t you saying anything? If it bothers you that much, I’ll have the tattoo removed. I don’t want it to affect your marriage.”

“No need.” Amelia lifted her gaze to meet Nicole’s, her voice laced with mockery. “You two suit each other perfectly.”

Why should she linger here and intrude on their little world?

With those words, Amelia clutched the dress and turned to leave.

She had just reached the doorway when she almost collided with Christopher.

The man’s expression was calm and detached as he stared at her. His eyes were a deep, endless black, unreadable yet strangely captivating.
