As Amelia said those words, Christopher passed by her side.

He cast her a rare glance, his eyes sharp and cold as frost.

She wasn’t sure if it was because he had heard what she just said.

Nathan glanced at Amelia and Evelyn, letting out a soft huff. “I thought you weren’t coming back? Now you show up again, huh?”

Amelia’s eyes narrowed as she stared at Christopher. She didn’t understand. If she had already stepped aside for Nicole, why insist on calling her back for Richard’s birthday barquet? Was this some kind of humiliation?

She had already shown her face. The spotlight belonged to Nicole and Christopher now.

She was about to leave with Evelyn when Richard’s voice stopped them.

“Amelia, you and your daughter sit over there.” He gestured to a lower table, placing them beneath the main guests.

He then placed Nicole and Christopher at the head of the table, with Nathan sitting beside them.

The message was clear. From the moment she married into the Zephyr family, Richard had never really welcomed her.

When Lucia noticed Amelia standing still, she immediately said, “Come on, hurry! Do you need a personal invitation?”

Christopher shot her a meaningful look. “Uncomfortable?”

There was an unspoken warning in his words, a reminder to do what was expected of her.

Amelia drew in a steadying breath. The situation had reached this point, and there was no reason to throw it all

away.

She guided Evelyn to the lower table and sat down. Evelyn was obedient and wise beyond her years. In a setting like this, she would cause no trouble.

At the head table, Nicole and Christopher chatted and laughed with Richard. Meanwhile, Nathan climbed right onto Richard’s lap, much to his delight.

Amelia lowered her gaze, her expression tight.

In her previous life, she had prepared a gift for Richard’s birthday and had been running around attending to everything. She had been so busy that she nearly passed out from low blood sugar. Yet Richard had deemed her unfit to appear in public, calling her a shame to the Zephyr family and forbidding her from showing her face.

Now, he had made it clear that Nicole had his full approval.

At this moment, Amelia understood. Christopher had clearly known about this all along-having her come here was nothing more than a way to pin her on the mark of shame and humiliate her.

Nicole rose gracefully, presenting her gift to Richard.

“Grandpa, I got you a first-edition antique from the 18th century. It’s quite a collector’s item.”

Richard was a passionate antique collector. He lit up at the sight, his smile stretching from ear to ear.

Richard’s eyes narrowed slightly, his tone sharp as he let out a pointed snort. “Unlike some others…”

The remark hung in the air, full of unspoken meaning.

Evelyn pressed her lips together, quiet. She had prepared a performance for her great-grandfather’s banquet well in advance, but with Amelia not saying a word, she stayed silent too.

Luke was sitting not far from Amelia, and he let out a mocking laugh.

“You really are like a knockoff wife. You belong to the main family, and here you are, reduced to sitting next to me. How do you even have the nerve to show up?

“Learn to be smarter next time. If you want wealth and status, don’t stoop to sleeping your way up. Using your looks to climb the ladder won’t get you far. Even if you tell others you’re Chris’ wife now, who’ll believe that?”

Amelia glanced at Luke coolly. “If anyone didn’t know better, they’d think you’re Nicole’s little lapdog. She takes the seat as the mistress, and you just wag your tail like a fool.”

Luke’s face darkened instantly.

Luke was Lucia’s nephew. Seeing him clash with Amelia, Lucia quickly laughed and said, “Amelia, what gift did you bring?”
