Chapter 71
Nathan jumped down from Grandpa’s lap. “Great-grandpa, I prepared a performance for you today to celebrate your 90th birthday.
“Oh?” Richard’s eyes lit with appreciation. “Wonderful. Let’s see what you’ve brought us.”
“I’m going to recite a poem,” Nathan said. “I hope your days ahead are as joyful and picturesque as the verses themselves.”
In just a few words, the little boy had Richard grinning from ear to ear.
Nathan stepped onto the grand stage in the banquet hall, microphone in hand, and recited his poetry with heartfelt emotion.
The applause that followed was deafening. Guests praised the Zephyr family, impressed that the next generation was already showing such promise.
“Thank you, everyone,” Nathan said, beaming with pride.
“My great-grandson is truly outstanding,” Richard said, smiling at Nicole. “You really know how to guide a child. Nathan has progressed so much with you by his side.”
The praise carried an unspoken rebuke for Amelia. Her careful efforts to raise her daughter were now considered a shortcoming.
“There’s really a difference between sons and daughters,” Lucia commented, glancing at Amelia. “The son is so accomplished. And the daughter? What has she prepared?”
Evelyn had never been fully welcomed or loved in the Zephyr family. Now, with Nathan in the spotlight, everyone saw his brilliance. By comparison, Evelyn seemed insignificant.
But Evelyn stood up, her voice steady. “I also prepared a performance for Great-grandpa.”
Amelia froze.
She hadn’t expected Evelyn to have been ready for anything. In her last life, Evelyn hadn’t prepared anything. Or maybe she had, and Amelia just hadn’t known.
Amelia furrowed her brow.
In her last life, she had paid too little attention to her daughter.
Lucia smiled faintly, casting a cold glance at Evelyn. “Are you going to prepare the same thing your brother does?”
Then she turned to Amelia. “Nate is already impressive, and one performance is enough. Children don’t need to show off too much.”
Her tone was icy, dripping with condescension. Evelyn looked at her grandmother timidly, pressed her lips together, and said nothing,
She had always been timid and overlooked, and at this moment, fear bubbled quietly beneath the surface.
Evelyn’s people-pleasing nature had been shaped by Amelia herself. In the last life, Amelia had spun endlessly to appease every member of the Zephyr family, and her daughter had naturally followed suit.
Amelia’s lips curled in a cold, bitter smile.

The Zephyr family had always been like this-showing endless favoritism toward Nathan, valuing sons over daughters, and looking down on Evelyn. It was as if Amelia’s daughter were inherently inferior.
Amelia’s gaze locked on Lucia. “Nathan gets to perform, but Evie doesn’t deserve it? Or have you never treated the two children equally?”
Lucia’s expression stiffened. She was caught off guard, rendered speechless by the sharp rebuke.
Amelia bent down and looked at her daughter, her voice gentle. “If you’re ready, just go up and do it. The most important thing is that you enjoy yourself. If anyone makes you feel uncomfortable, you can say no. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”
Evelyn nodded firmly. “I’m ready, and I’ll do even better than Nate.”
“I didn’t have as many learning opportunities as him before, but Mommy sent me to learn so many new things. Now I have more skills than him.”
Even children had pride. Evelyn had a sense of fairness, and moments like this made her want to prove herself.
She didn’t want to embarrass Amelia.
In the past, all the spotlight had gone to her brother, and Evelyn had been content to support him from behind. But now it felt like everyone was watching them, waiting to mock them.
Then she would make them eat their words! She would not let her mother down.
She wanted her father to see that excellence didn’t belong only to Nathan, and that she could be outstanding too.
Summoning all her courage, Evelyn stepped onto the stage.
Nathan snorted. “My little sister’s such a hopeless idiot. What could she even perform? She’s just trying to copy me! Whatever I do, she always wants to do too. She’s such a try-hard!”
