Chapter 72
Evelyn glanced at Nathan.
He stuck out his tongue. “Try-hard.”
She took a deep breath, ignored him, and stepped onto the stage.
Standing in front of the computer, Evelyn opened a simple program she had learned from Amelia. She planned to create a digital portrait of Richard right then and there.
As she worked, the figure on the screen became sharper and more lifelike with every stroke.
The guests in the audience widened their eyes in disbelief. A child so young, and she could manipulate a program to produce such detailed imagery?
Even Richard’s eyes lit with a hint of admiration.
Lucia’s expression darkened with each passing second. When had Evelyn even learned these skills?
Nicole’s brow furrowed as she watched Evelyn’s every move; she could see clearly that the girl was operating the program herself. At such a young age, it seemed impossible.
Lucia’s face remained cold as she summoned a servant and whispered a few words into their ear.
Amelia kept her gaze on the big screen, equally impressed by Evelyn’s abilities. She had always demonstrated talent in art, and she possessed an uncanny memory for the skills she had learned. Amelia had only taught Evelyn to use the program once or twice. She hadn’t expected her to reach this level.
Although her movements were slightly hesitant and slow, every action was deliberate and genuine.
Nathan looked at Nicole. “Mommy, what is she doing? I want to learn too!”
Evelyn could not outshine him. He had to be first at everything.
Nicole lowered her gaze, smiling as she ruffled Nathan’s hair. “Alright, we’ll teach you when we get home tonight.

Nathan patted his chest proudly. “I’m definitely going to learn better than Evie. Right, Daddy?”
Christopher’s gaze stayed fixed on the stage, his eyes calm and unreadable.
When he heard his son speak, he finally looked away, and a faint smile touched his lips as he answered, “Of course.

A few minutes later, the large screen suddenly went dark, and the lights on stage flickered out with it.
The sudden blackout cut the power to the computer too, killing the connection. Staring at the half-finished painting, Evelyn froze in place, stunned.
A ripple of murmurs spread through the guests.
Lucia smiled sweetly. “Sorry, everyone. There’s been a power outage on the stage, but the banquet can continue as planned.”
Then, Lucia called Evelyn. “Come on, darling. Let’s get you down. The wires on stage are shorted, so you can’t perform anymore.”

Amelia’s gaze cooled as she looked at Lucia, taking in that overly sweet grandmotherly smile, and she let out a quiet sneer.
She knew exactly how the power had been cut.
Evelyn’s talent was shining in front of everyone, and Lucia simply couldn’t stand it. Nathan was the Zephyr family’s eldest grandson. There was no way she would allow Evelyn to outshine him.
Evelyn looked up at Amelia.
Amelia stepped onto the stage, ready to lift her daughter down.
By now, everyone already knew who was more talented. There was no need to compare further. Victory and defeat were clear in their minds.
Amelia was about to lift Evelyn down when the stage lights suddenly came back on.
Dorothy appeared from a short distance away. “The power’s back. Let Evie continue painting.”
She had left to rest because of fatigue, but she hadn’t expected that in her absence, Amelia and Evelyn would be treated this way.
Lucia froze, frowning. “Mom!”
“What?” Dorothy asked sharply. “If you don’t want to watch, then don’t.”
Lucia had no words—she dared not defy Dorothy. As long as Richard and Dorothy were alive, Lucia could never take control of the Zephyr family. She had no choice but to step back.
Everyone watched as Evelyn’s painting progressed beautifully, and she quickly completed a portrait of Richard.
Beneath it were the words, “May your years be as endless as the heavens, your light as lasting as the sun and moon.”
Evelyn looked at Richard. “Great-grandpa, may you grow stronger and healthier with every passing year.”
It was obvious to all that Evelyn’s knowledge and skill far surpassed Nathan’s.
A hint of a smile appeared on Richard’s face. “Well, I never imagined my great-granddaughter could be this talented too!”
