Even though Richard favored boys and adored Nathan, he couldn’t help praising Evelyn’s talent.

The guests were also full of compliments for Evelyn’s performance.

Nicole’s expression slipped, her face falling even though she tried to keep it composed.

Nathan sulked beside her, clearly feeling wronged. In his mind, his little sister could never outshine him. Yet now, somehow, she had. He vowed he would surpass her one day. After all, he had always thought himself smarter than Evelyn.

After Evelyn’s performance, the banquet continued.

Many of the guests were business partners. Seeing Nicole at the table, they all approached to offer her drinks.

She had made a name for herself at the Northon airshow, and Christopher had taken her to the Institute 511 open day as well. Anyone in that field knew Nicole was a rising star, and her connection to the Zephyr family only made her more influential.

Naturally, there were many eager to curry favor.

Nicole didn’t refuse. She was treated like a star, one toast after another, and she navigated it all with ease.

Christopher noticed she had already had quite a few drinks and stepped in to shield her from more. After a few more sips, he smiled faintly and intervened. “Nikki can’t handle alcohol. Show some mercy. Don’t push her any further.”

“Mr. Zephyr, you’re really protective of her,” someone murmured knowingly.

Everyone understood that Nicole was under Christopher’s protection, and even those who wanted to impress her had to know their limits.

Amelia watched him take those drinks so casually and saw the warmth and ease in his gaze toward Nicole.

He had never looked at her like that.

Christopher’s eyes had always been cold toward her. Even now that she had let go, seeing him like this still cut sharply.

She couldn’t help but remember the days when she worked as his assistant, drinking herself sick at business dinners until her stomach bled, and he hadn’t shown the slightest bit of concern.

The difference between being loved and being unloved was painfully clear.

Amelia took a deep breath and shifted her gaze, focusing instead on helping Evelyn with her food, carefully feeding her little bites.

By around eight or nine in the evening, a light rain began to fall. The birthday banquet was just about over, and guests were gradually leaving.

Dorothy adored Evelyn and had been holding her in her arms, soothing her throughout the night.

After the last wave of guests had gone, the sky had darkened even more, and the rain was falling harder.

Amelia frowned slightly as she watched the downpour through the dark night. Driving in this weather wouldn’t be safe, especially with her wrist still injured. She had taken a taxi to the banquet earlier for that very reason.

Lowering her gaze, she pulled out her phone and opened a ride-hailing app.

But for a long time, no one accepted the request.

Amelia exhaled slowly, a deep, weary sigh.

Dorothy’s voice came from behind her. “Mia, you should stay the night here. It’s late, and with this heavy rain, neither driving nor taking a taxi is safe.”

Amelia stared at the ride-hailing app, still showing no drivers available, then glanced at the pouring rain. There was no sign it would let up anytime soon.

She should have left earlier. Now, staying the night was the only safe option.

If it were just her, she could have risked going down the mountain in the rain. But with Evelyn with her, she could never gamble with her daughter’s life.

Normally, Evelyn would be asleep by eight or nine. It was already ten now, and she had grown drowsy in Dorothy’s arms, her little body heavy with sleep.

Evelyn yawned, clearly exhausted. The early summer weather brought chilly mornings and evenings, and after a rainstorm on the mountain, the cool air seeped into her fragile frame.

Amelia shivered at the thought of her last life, when Evelyn had caught a chill, developed a fever, and eventually died of pneumonia. The memory still made her heart race.

Finally, she nodded. “Okay.”

After tucking Evelyn into bed and watching her drift off, Amelia turned and closed the door. She headed to her bedroom to wash up and change into fresh clothes.
