Chapter 74

Amelia still kept some clothes in Whitmore Manor.

Just as she closed the door, she ran into Stephanie passing by the courtyard gate.

“Mia,” Stephanie called, holding a large umbrella as she strode toward the door. “Where’s Chris? Not with you?”

Amelia knew perfectly well this was just a deliberate jab, a way to provoke her.

She forced a wry, mocking smile onto her face. “If you’re looking for him, you can just call him.”

Stephanie immediately sensed the complete shift in Amelia’s attitude, which was a full 180-degree turnaround. Before, Amelia used to butter up the Zephyr family members every chance she got. Now, she carried herself with an air of authority, cold and untouchable.

Stephanie assumed it was Amelia’s insecurity kicking in after seeing how impressive Nicole had been. Tonight, at the birthday banquet, Nicole had shone, while Amelia, as Christopher’s wife, had looked diminished and out of place.

“Not worried that your husband isn’t home? Aren’t you afraid he’ll divorce you?”

Last time, Amelia had flatly refused Stephanie’s interference, even claiming that she was going to divorce. Stephanie had scoffed at the idea, thinking Amelia didn’t have the guts.

And yet here she was, returning tonight like nothing had happened. That incident still burned in Stephanie’s mind, and she wasn’t about to let the chance to mock Amelia slip by.

Amelia didn’t bother answering such trivial questions.

Stephanie smiled and continued, “Chris took Nikki home. With this rain, Nikki said something came up at home, so he had to go. Didn’t he tell you?”

Amelia paused, a prickling sensation creeping through her chest, like something heavy wrapped around her, making it hard to breathe.

She had never been able to get Christopher to take her anywhere on command. One year, when Evelyn fell ill in the middle of the night with a high fever that wouldn’t break, she had begged him to take her to the hospital.

He had only said that work was busy, and he didn’t have time.

Now, seeing him escort Nicole, Amelia wasn’t surprised. It just made the contrast sting sharper. All the years she had poured her heart out, every sacrifice she had made, suddenly felt absurd and cheap. Christopher had never truly seen her as a person.

He and Nicole had grown up together. Rain or shine, nothing could have stopped him from taking Nicole home tonight.

Stephanie looked at the expression on Amelia’s face and smirked.

“Feeling a little sense of crisis now? Look at Nikki tonight, standing beside him. If I were Chris, I’d think a woman as capable and impressive as her is the only one worth showing off. No wonder his mind isn’t on you. No matter how pretty you are, you’re still just a pretty face who can cook and clean.”

Stephanie’s tone was laced with false concern, offering unsolicited advice.

“If you want to capture a man’s heart, you need to be exceptional yourself. Beat Nikki, and Chris’s attention will naturally be on you.”

Stephanie believed Amelia had schemed her way into his bed back then, all just to claim Christopher’s heart.

Hearing these words now, Amelia found them both grating and laughable. She used to love Christopher so blindly that she would have crumbled at this, letting insecurity and self-doubt consume her.

Now, she could only shake her head and smile at the irony.

Amelia looked at Stephanie coolly. “A woman doesn’t become exceptional just to be noticed by a man. He isn’t worth it.”

With that, she turned and walked away.

When she had loved, she had given everything. Now that she didn’t, she left cleanly and gracefully.

Stephanie watched Amelia’s proud, slender figure retreat and let out a scoff.

“Still so stubborn, aren’t you?”

A housewife like Amelia could never really be exceptional. No matter how hard she tried, she’d never compare to Nicole.

In Stephanie’s mind, Nicole would always make the perfect sister-in-law. She would be admired wherever she went, always someone worth showing off.

On the other hand, Amelia existed in the Zephyr family only as a nanny. Nothing more.
