Chapter 75

Christopher had taken Nicole home tonight, so he probably wouldn’t be coming back. He had never liked staying overnight at Whitmore Manor.

Amelia had been exhausted lately, barely getting any rest. She hadn’t expected to sleep well at the manor, but she fell into a deep, peaceful slumber as she listened to the rain outside.

Half-awake and still drowsy, she caught a familiar, delicate scent in the air.

She rolled over and tried to go back to sleep.

But when she opened her eyes again, Amelia realized she was lying in Christopher’s arms. The man was holding her close, his posture intimate and possessive.

Amelia’s heart skipped, and her first instinct was to push him away. She immediately acted on the thought.

The man, still half-asleep, frowned slightly and pulled her back against him. He murmured in a husky, lazy voice, “Babe, don’t move…”

She was stunned by his words.

Throughout their years of marriage, Christopher had never called her that, nor had he ever held her like this while sleeping.

There was only one possible explanation.

He had mistaken her for someone else he thought she was Nicole.

Her chest ached sharply. So this was how it had always been between them. The difference between love and indifference was painfully clear.

Amelia took a deep breath and pushed Christopher away again. “Look closely and see who I am!”

Groggy from sleep, he blinked open his eyes. When he finally saw her clearly, his brows furrowed ever so slightly, and he immediately let go. Seeing the calm clarity in his eyes, the truth was undeniable-he had mistaken her for someone else.

Amelia got out of bed and put some distance between them, her face etched with disgust. She felt profoundly uncomfortable in this position.

Christopher sat up, his gaze calm and detached as he looked at her. “Grandma asked me to come back last night.”

Amelia ignored him.

Of course. After all these years, only Dorothy had any sway over him.

Back when they were first married, their bodies had been in perfect sync. Night after night, Amelia had thought that was love, because surely, love was what made passion meaningful.

It had taken her this long to realize that a man could be intimate without love.

Ever since Evelyn was born, and Christopher spent so much time caring for Nicole, he had no interest in being with her in that way anymore. Now Amelia understood-he had been preserving himself for Nicole all along.

The thought made her feel both bitter. Fate was truly mocking her.

Her eyes narrowed as she looked at him. “I went to the birthday banquet as requested. What about what I came for?

She would retrieve her grandmother’s heirloom, but she wouldn’t make the same foolish mistakes again. She also hated herself for sleeping so deeply last night that she didn’t even notice him returning.

Christopher’s expression remained calm. “Once I find it, I’ll give it to you.”

“You don’t know where the brooch is?”

Amelia frowned, a flash of frustration prickling at her chest. She felt played with, and it stung.

“I never said I wouldn’t give it to you.”

“Christopher, is mocking me really that much fun for you?”

Seeing her irritation, the man’s expression remained unchanged. Calm and indifferent, he replied, “Is it?”

There had been no deadline. He was completely nonchalant, as if her temper was always trivial and unworthy of attention.

Amelia’s face turned cold as she stepped out of the bedroom, stuffing her frustration deep inside as she made her way downstairs.

Evelyn and Nathan were already at the table, eating breakfast.

Dorothy smiled warmly at her. “Mia, come eat. I got up early to make chicken soup just for you. You’ve lost some weight lately, so this should help you feel better.”

Amelia took a deep breath, forcing herself to push down her irritation, and walked over to sit. “Thank you, Grandma.”

Dorothy had always been kind to her. Amelia didn’t need to vent her anger onto the older woman.

Evelyn beamed at her. “Good morning, Mommy.”

Nathan snorted and turned his head away.

Amelia smiled gently. “Morning, sweetie.”

Even with her best effort to mask it, a small crack in her expression betrayed her feelings.

Dorothy studied her and asked, “Did you sleep well last night? You don’t look so good.”

As Dorothy scooped soup into a bowl, she said lightly, “Last night, it rained so hard, and Chris sent Nikki home. I called him to come back. His wife and children are here, so he shouldn’t have left, especially since your wrist is injured and you didn’t drive. After breakfast, I’ll have him take you down the mountain.”

No sooner had she finished speaking than Christopher appeared at the bottom of the stairs, casually dressed and moving at his usual unhurried pace.

“Come eat,” Dorothy called.

Christopher sat down directly beside Amelia. He glanced at her bowl, noticing only soup, and picked up a bread roll for her.

“You like these, right? Eat more. Grandma said you’ve lost weight.”

In front of his grandmother, he always put on a show, the perfect husband persona flawless in its performance.

Amelia looked at the bread roll on her plate. She couldn’t stop the small, bitter smile coming to her lips. After all these years of marriage, living and eating under the same roof, he still didn’t know that she had never liked bread rolls.

Even if he cared a little more, it wouldn’t have been hard to notice her lifelong dislike.

He must have been so completely indifferent to get it this wrong, playing the role of the perfect husband so clumsily.

Then, she remembered-Nicole had once mentioned that she liked bread rolls.

A sarcastic smile tugged at her lips.

After breakfast, Dorothy left, reminding Christopher to see Amelia and the children safely down the mountain.

Amelia set down her spoon and gave him a cool look. “Stop pretending to be the perfect husband so clumsily. You might not think it’s disgusting, but I do.”
