Amelia felt her heart sink.

It wasn’t unusual for Christopher to ignore her calls.

She dialed again, and this time the call went through. “Hello?”

Nicole’s voice came through the line. “Who’s this?”

Hearing Nicole’s voice, Amelia’s hand tightened around the phone, her knuckles turning white.

In the past, Christopher never let her touch his phone. Now, he handed it over freely for Nicole to answer his calls. How much trust and intimacy between them did it take to reach that point?

How ironic.

Amelia drew in a steadying breath and spoke calmly. “I’m looking for Christopher.”

“Mia?” Nicole sounded slightly surprised. “Oh, sorry. Chris doesn’t have your number saved, so I thought it was a spam call and almost hung up. He’s busy right now. Do you want me to pass a message along?”

Amelia hesitated. She cared about the brooch ending up in Nicole’s hands, but this was her conflict with Christopher. She didn’t want to drag anyone else into it.

“I’ll wait. When he’s free, have him call me back.”

Her voice was calm and detached.

Nicole chuckled and replied, “Okay, I’ll let him know.”

After hanging up, Amelia kept a close eye on her phone, waiting for his call.

But it never came.

Near the end of the workday, Jasper walked over holding a document. “Here’s your employment contract. The salary is at the highest tier, one hundred thousand dollars a month, and any bonuses down the line will be added on.”

Amelia paused for a moment, then immediately set her work aside and stood, looking at Jasper. “This salary is too high. I haven’t even contributed much to the company yet. And as for bonuses, that’s even more than I deserve.”

Jasper’s gaze was steady and piercing. “Mia, I know your abilities. Your value far exceeds this salary. Besides, when you came back, didn’t you say it yourself? You were coming in with your skills first, then investing money once the profits came in. Or is it that you never really planned to stay at Nova Nine?”

Of course, Amelia had no such thoughts. She simply felt guilty accepting such generous terms when she hadn’t been in the industry for so many years, and she had only just started working at the company.

She pursed her lips. “I’ll accept the salary, but the bonuses+”

“Stop overthinking it,” Jasper interrupted, his tone firm. “You’ve always had a stake in Nova Nine. You just left in the middle to throw yourself into the grave of marriage. Now that you’re back, things go back to how they should

be.”

At that moment, Winona stepped out of the office and wrapped an arm around Amelia. “Jasper and I are the biggest shareholders in this company. Since we both agree, there’s no reason for you to refuse, right?”

Amelia’s grip on the contract tightened slightly. This time, she wouldn’t let down the weight of their trust. She picked up the pen and signed her name.

“That’s more like it!” Winona exclaimed, hugging her. “From now on, the three of us are unstoppable. Nothing can stand in our way. We’ll grow stronger and bigger together!”

After being trapped in family life for so many years, her partners had been waiting for her all along.

In a way, wasn’t that its own kind of luck?

Even after Amelia finished work and picked up Evelyn, Christopher’s call never came.

She tried again, but it wouldn’t go through. Her expression darkened slightly. Grabbing her bag, she headed out.

By eight o’clock that evening, Amelia arrived at Harbor Villa. She raised a hand and pressed the doorbell.

Anna opened the door, her eyes lighting up at the sight of Amelia. “Mrs. Zephyr, you’re back! Why ring the bell? You could have just used the code to get in.”
