Chapter 78
Amelia sneered inwardly.
The entry code had long been changed, and coming back now was nothing short of self-humiliation. The marriage wasn’t over, yet in this house, she was already little more than a guest.
Amelia hummed and didn’t bother explaining anything to Anna. Her mind was focused on the purpose of her visit. “Has Christopher come home?”
Anna replied. “He hasn’t returned yet. He said he’s working late tonight, and he might not be back.”
“Mommy’s home?”
Nathan came bounding down from upstairs. Seeing Amelia, his face lit up. After all, Amelia hadn’t been home in so long. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he had missed her.
He especially missed her cooking—he hadn’t tasted her meals in ages.
Like old times, he leapt into Amelia’s arms. “Mommy, can you take me to school tomorrow? I want to eat the shrimp you make in the morning.”
Shrimp made by anyone else gave him allergies, but Amelia’s never did. And it tasted amazing. Nathan nuzzled into her, acting spoiled.
Amelia felt a little dazed, as if she had stepped back into her past life. Nathan was just like Evelyn right now, well- behaved and obedient, not the tense, edgy child she remembered.
Some habits he had weren’t great, but she knew they could be corrected with proper guidance.
She had devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising these children for five years, so to say she felt no attachment would be a lie.
However, it was hardly surprising that Nathan was naturally drawn to his biological mother.
He didn’t know that Nicole was his real mom, yet time and again, he lashed out at Amelia with harsh words on her behalf. Over time, he had grown into someone she barely recognized.
Amelia took a deep breath and gently pushed Nathan back, then calmly said, “Your new mommy can make it for you.”
Nathan stiffened slightly. “Mommy, are you still upset with me?”
He looked up at her with wide, innocent eyes. “But Daddy said it’s okay for me to call her Mommy. Daddy said I can have two Mommies.”
He spoke with hope in his voice, eyes fixed on her. “Are you really not going to want me?”
He believed wholeheartedly that Amelia would never abandon him. Yet she never seemed to be home, and a small part of him was afraid. Seeing her return today, he was overjoyed.
Amelia’s gaze softened as she looked at Nathan, her heart heavy with conflicting emotions.
In this second chance at life, she had completely let go of Christopher. But Nathan was just a child, still immature and learning about the world.
But at the end of the day, Nathan was still Nicole’s son. He called her “Mommy,” but how much of that was truly his own feeling, with Christopher quietly nudging him along? Children didn’t have fixed loyalties. They simply

follow the cues set by the adults around them.
If he wanted to acknowledge his birth mother, Amelia had no reason to compete for him. In Christopher and Nicole’s eyes, she was nothing more than a fool raising someone else’s child.
Amelia took a deep breath, stood up, and her voice was icy. “That’s right. I don’t want you anymore.”
Nathan’s face crumpled in disbelief, and he jumped to his feet. “I don’t believe it! You’re just sulking, Mommy. If you keep this up, I really won’t let you be my mommy anymore!”
He ran upstairs crying.
Amelia watched his retreating back, her expression softening slightly, but she said nothing.
She spent the entire evening sitting on the sofa and waiting for Christopher, but he never came back.
Around six in the morning, Amelia was about to leave when she heard the front door open. She saw Nicole supporting Christopher into the house.
“Honestly, you know I can handle my drinks. Why did you have to shield me so much?”
At the entryway, she moved with practiced ease, undoing his buttons and belt.
“Come on, get undressed and go take a shower. You stink!”
Just as she reached for his belt, Christopher’s hand shot out, stopping her abruptly.
