Chapter 87

Jasper looked at Amelia, a flicker of pain in his eyes.

“He really treats you like that?”

Christopher didn’t even glance her way and walked openly with another woman.

Nicole wasn’t even a full-time employee at Zephyr Group, yet she could come to negotiate a deal. Other than being treated like the boss’s wife, Jasper couldn’t think of another reason Nicole would be granted such privileges.

He couldn’t help but admire Amelia’s patience. Nicole had been so brazen earlier.

Those who are favored were always fearless.

Amelia quietly turned away and spoke calmly. “Negotiations are always a give and take. If you put aside the fact that I was married to Christopher, you wouldn’t be this upset, would you? I’m divorcing him. Whoever he’s with now has nothing to do with me.”

Lately, Amelia’s mind was entirely consumed by research. She spent her days hunched over her laptop, running calculations, or sitting in meetings with the team.

After returning from Zephyr Group, she continued her work at Nova Nine Technologies. When the workday ended, she went home to care for Evelyn.

But at nine o’clock that evening, her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone.

It was Christopher.

Amelia hadn’t planned to answer, but he rarely called her. When he did, it was always for a reason.

She picked up and calmly asked, “Yes? What is it?”

Christopher said, “Nate has a fever. Take him to the hospital.”

“And what does that have to do with me?” Amelia coldly replied.

“Amelia.” Christopher’s voice darkened slightly. “He’s your son. A child with a fever isn’t something to take lightly. Don’t start sulking at a time like this.”

Amelia flinched, and her chest tightened.

His words cut sharply.

He certainly knew that a child’s fever wasn’t trivial.

But in the past, where had he been when Evelyn was sick? He had promised to come to the hospital, yet he had gone off to be with Nicole instead.

Amelia’s eyes stung. She took a deep, steadying breath and turned toward the window. “If you think it’s such a big deal, go yourself.”

“I’m out of town on a business trip with Nicole,” Christopher said. “Go handle it now.”

Business trip or romantic getaway? And now he wanted her to handle it?

Amelia laughed mockingly.

“There’s a doctor if he has a fever. I’m not a doctor. Me going to the hospital won’t help anyone.”

Her voice was sharp and icy. She was about to hang up when Christopher said, “Then you don’t want Nova Nine to continue working with Zephyr Group, do you?”

His voice on the other end was calm, almost detached, but it carried a weight of threat.

Amelia froze, and her hand tightened around the phone until her knuckles turned white.

Nova Nine Technologies was at a critical growth stage. She couldn’t let something like this shake her focus.

A chill ran through her body, as if her blood had frozen in place.

Christopher really knew how to press her weakest spot.

He remembered how close she and Jasper had been back in school. She had told him herself, endlessly sharing stories of her past, stumbling over memories as she spoke. He had always listened with the same calm, unreadable expression, as if it bored him.

Now, with her at Nova Nine Technologies, in whatever role, he could predict that she wouldn’t let personal matters drag down a friend.

Everything she had once shared with him had turned into weapons for him to use against her.

He knew how much she resented Nicole and Nathan, yet he still sent her there.

Amelia had to admit that Christopher was a cruel man.

Soon, Amelia arrived at the children’s hospital and entered Nathan’s ward.

He had a high fever of 102 degrees, with vomiting, diarrhea, and even an allergic rash.

On the small hospital bed, he looked tiny and fragile. His cheeks burned red from the fever, and he was unresponsive, sunk deep into sleep.

Anna hovered nearby, trembling with worry. When she saw Amelia enter, she finally let out a breath. “Mrs. Zephyr, you’re finally here. I really don’t understand why Mr. Nathan suddenly got like this. He was fine at dinner tonight…”

“What did he eat?”

Anna listed everything Nathan had eaten, and Amelia noted that none of it was something he was allergic to.
