Chapter 88
“The doctor gave him a fever shot, but it’s not coming down. What are we going to do? I’m scared it’ll damage his brain!”
Anna was panicking. If anything happened to Nathan and Christopher came after her, what would she do?
Amelia stayed calm. “Get some alcohol and find the doctor for an additional medication.”
She named the medicine.
Whenever Nathan ran a fever, this was the only thing that worked. It was a remedy Amelia had learned from experience caring for him.
Nathan had been premature and frail since birth, always a little spoiled. Severe allergic reactions could trigger high fevers, and only the proper medicine could break it.
Anna watched as Amelia carefully wiped Nathan’s skin with alcohol, then gave him the medication. Ten minutes later, when they checked his temperature again, it had finally started to drop.
Anna exhaled in relief.
Even in a hospital, doctors could only prescribe based on experience. Parents knew their child’s body best.
Amelia quietly gazed at Nathan lying in bed.
Her feelings were tangled.
It wasn’t that Amelia had no love for Nathan. The truth was, she couldn’t bring herself to just cut him off. From his first days as a newborn, through nursing, his first words calling her “Mommy”, and all the way until now- she had been the one raising him.
Though she hadn’t birthed him, he was no different from her own child. She loved him as if he were, paying even more attention than she did to Evelyn, since he was so fragile.
If she hadn’t come tonight, Nathan’s fever might have caused serious damage to his body.
Amelia didn’t leave. She stayed until morning.
When Nathan finally opened his eyes, he saw Amelia sleeping at the bedside, leaning over him.
He stirred, tugging at her sleeve with his small hand, his childish voice hoarse.
“Mommy… I’m thirsty.”
Amelia opened her eyes and saw that he was awake. She poured him some water and asked gently, “Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere else?”
Nathan looked pitiful. “My head hurts a little… My whole body feels so weak…”
It was normal after a fever.
“What did you eat last night?”.
Nathan lowered his gaze and stayed silent.
A couple of nights ago, Nicole had brought him back some crayfish. Amelia normally never let him eat those, but last night he had sneaked a lot.

Now, when she asked, he didn’t dare tell her. If Amelia found out, she would scold him and maybe even hit him. She had always been strict whenever he sneaked these things before.
Seeing him so quiet and unwilling to speak, Amelia didn’t press.
“Stay here in the hospital and rest. Your father will be here soon,” she said calmly.
She had no intention of taking responsibility for Nathan anymore. This was just a habitual question, a reflex.
From the look on Nathan’s face, she could tell he was scared. There was no need to pry further.
Amelia had just finished speaking and was about to leave when Christopher and Nicole pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Nicole stepped into the hospital room, her face tight with worry.
“Nate, are you okay?”
Nathan leapt into her arms. “Mommy, I’m fine.”
Amelia watched them. She had raised Nathan from infancy. He wasn’t usually affectionate with others, but he was always close to Nicole. Closer than he was with her.
Just now, he hadn’t even sought her out.
Amelia dre
a deep breath.
She turned to Christopher. “Once you help bring a child into this world, you’re responsible for their life. It’s not about indulging them every time. Nathan is allergic to seafood-shrimp, crab, fish, freshwater, or saltwater. He can’t eat any of it.”
Christopher frowned. “I never gave Nate any of those things.”
Anna, knowing well that Nathan couldn’t eat seafood, naturally hadn’t given him any either.
Christopher’s gaze shifted to Nicole.
Nicole froze. “I didn’t know Nate couldn’t eat that-
Nathan clung to Nicole. “It’s not Mommy Nikki’s fault. I wanted it myself. Mommy never let me eat it before, so now I can’t tolerate seafood!”
