Chapter 91
Christopher’s sharp scolding sent Nathan into instant tears. He wailed loudly, then lunged into Nicole’s arms.
“Mommy, while you were gone, this stepmom kept picking on me. Now even Daddy’s being mean!”
Nicole’s heart softened immediately, and she hurried to wipe his tears. She said gently, “Nate, what you just did was wrong. You can’t hit Ms. Amelia, understand? She may not be your real mom, but she’s taken care of you for four years. We have to appreciate that. Now go apologize to her, okay?”
Amelia watched coldly as Nicole lectured Nathan.
Ms. Amelia? She couldn’t help the bitter laugh that formed on her lips.
Nathan actually listened. His eyes flicked to Amelia. He looked reluctant, still frustrated, but he forced out a proper apology.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered.
“Who are you apologizing to?” Nicole prompted him.
He pressed his lips together, then tried again. “I’m sorry, Ms. Amelia.”
“That’s better,” Nicole said, wiping Nathan’s tears with a smile. “No more temper tantrums, alright? That’s not polite, you know.”
“Okay.” Nathan’s voice trembled. “So, you’re my real Mommy?”
Nicole held him close. “Shh, it’s okay. Don’t cry. Mommy’s back. No one will hurt you anymore.”
Her words sounded as if Amelia, after raising Nathan for four years, had been the one bullying him all along.
Her chest tightened painfully, as if a heavy weight had settled over her heart.
“Mia, don’t get me wrong,” Nicole added suddenly, sensing something. “I’m not soft-hearted. I just hate seeing him cry, that’s all.”
She looked at Amelia. “Nate’s still little. You shouldn’t take it personally.”
Amelia took a deep breath.
Every word Nicole spoke was a clear claim of territory.
Amelia cast a glance at Christopher. He stood nearby, expression calm and unreadable, showing no intention of speaking up.
Amelia let out a small, bitter laugh and looked away.
What was she even expecting? That the cold, indifferent man would step in to set things right?
They were the real family here.
There was no reason for her to stay any longer.
She picked up her bag and walked quickly down the stairs. By the time she reached the street, a drizzle had started. The rain was fine and persistent, the cool air cutting through her, clearing her mind after a sleepless night.
She waited at the curb for a cab.

At that moment, Christopher’s Maybach pulled up in front of her. Amelia averted her gaze and moved to wait somewhere else.
The car followed her, then the window rolled down. Nigel called out, “Mrs. Zephyr, Mr. Zephyr said your hand’s injured and asked me to take you to the hospital. Please get in.”
The words “Mrs. Zephyr” rang in her ears now like nails on a chalkboard, sharp and utterly repulsive.
Amelia’s face went cold. She turned sharply and slipped into an alley, moving onto another street to hail a cab.
Nigel was driving, which made things complicated. He called Christopher. “Sir, Mrs. Zephyr refused to take my
car.”
“Alright.”
Just as Amelia got into her cab, Christopher’s call came through. She glared at the screen and hung up immediately.
Moments later, her phone buzzed with a text from him.
[Nate’s still young. Watch your words and tone with him.]
The message sounded like a lecture, as if she were being scolded for overreacting to a child.
Amelia exhaled slowly, a weight pressing on her chest. She realized that she had been far too soft on Christopher in the past. That softness had allowed him to take advantage, to push boundaries without a second thought.
She had loved him so much that she had set aside her pride and dignity just to please him.
Now, she understood.
No matter how much a woman loved a man, she couldn’t sacrifice her self-respect in the process. The lower she placed herself, the less others would value her.
