Chapter 93

Evelyn was young, but incredibly thoughtful for her age.

Amelia lowered her gaze, a deep guilt pressing in. She looked at Evelyn and ruffled her hair gently, offering a soft, comforting smile.

“Just focus on being happy as you grow. Don’t worry about everything else.”

After tucking Evelyn in, Amelia pulled out her first-aid kit and redressed her wrist. The stitches from the hospital had torn open again, and she planned to go back tomorrow for proper treatment.

Seeing the gaping wound on her wrist, Amelia’s brows knit tightly. A sudden worry prickled at her. She couldn’t take any chances.

Her work demanded steady hands. Operating measurement and control systems required millimeter-level precision, and handling robotic arms demanded the same. Many processes had been mechanized, but numerous projects still relied on precise manual work.

If her wrist didn’t heal properly, it could affect her ability to work in the future.

At the hospital, Amelia made an appointment in the emergency department. The doctor examined her wrist and the depth of the wound.

“You need to let it heal properly,” he said. “Limit wrist movement. The bones aren’t damaged, so it can fully recover, but if the wound keeps reopening, there will definitely be some lasting impact.”

Amelia nodded. After the doctor treated the wound, she went straight to the payment counter.

At the night window, a familiar figure caught her eye. She hesitated for a moment, about to call out, but then Claire rushed toward the inpatient building with papers in hand.

Amelia frowned and followed, keeping pace all the way to the door of the respiratory ward.

“You’ve been working so hard, running back and forth for me while handling the company. Things haven’t been easy at work lately, have they?” said a man in a hospital bed.

Claire peeled an orange for him. “It’s fine. I’ll be meeting with the investors tomorrow. Once they’re on board, the company will get back on track quickly. Don’t worry about the business. Just take care of yourself.”

Amelia stood at the door of the ward, listening to her mother and uncle, Felix Lane.

She froze for a moment.

Was her uncle sick? Why hadn’t they told her?

A wave of unease tightened her chest, and she turned and headed straight for the nurse’s station.

Claire stepped out of the room.

Seeing Amelia sitting on the bench by the door, her heart sank. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say. “Why

Amelia drew a steadying breath and stood. “I already know.”

If she hadn’t run into them tonight and gone to the nurse for the medical record, she wouldn’t have known Felix

was in the middle stage of lung cancer.

She had been reborn a year earlier, and she hadn’t known her uncle was sick even in her previous life.

Claire’s eyes welled with tears as she pulled Amelia into a tight hug. “We just didn’t want to burden you.”

Felix had once fallen in love in college, but his girlfriend had died in an accident. He had never married, and even now, he was still alone. He had always cared for Amelia and Claire, and had been a pillar in running the family

business.

Now that he was in trouble, how could it ever be considered a burden?

A heavy weight pressed against Amelia’s chest. How many of the people who truly cared about her had she ignored, all for the Zephyr family?

No wonder the company’s books had been running in the red!

She looked at her mother. “You’re meeting the investor tomorrow, right? Do you feel confident?”

“I do, but the investor is still evaluating the company. All these years, your uncle handled these negotiations. Now that I’ve taken over, I’m realizing just how difficult it really is. If we secure this investor and move forward with the project, the company could turn a profit within a year.”

Amelia frowned. So her mother’s work securing this investment was crucial. Success was the only option.

Amelia squeezed her mother’s hand. “Then I’ll go with you tomorrow. I have some experience in this area.”

That night, after quickly reviewing the project proposals, Amelia found herself unable to sleep.
