“Not happy?” John sensed the change in Pamela’s mood.

Pamela said nothing.

He had once told her that as long as she didn’t target Sierra, he could accept her scheming for herself. Did that also mean he could accept her jealousy as well?

Without a change in his expression, John pulled his hand out of hers and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Why aren’t you talking?”

“I’m afraid if I say I’m unhappy, you’ll be upset.” Pamela gathered her courage, her voice carrying a note of resentment. “I understand you have to be with Sierra for Tommy, but…”

“But your possessiveness is acting up, and you don’t want me to go,” John said, seeing straight through her. “Is that it?”

Pamela bit her lip. “Yes.”

John just looked at her.

“You told me I was the most important person to you.” Once she got the first sentence out, the second came easily. “But now, you keep putting me behind them over and over again. I can get unhappy, too.”

“Pamela.” John’s voice shifted. The seriousness in his tone instantly gave Pamela a bad feeling.

A moment later, his words came out.

“You should understand why I said those things more than anyone.”

Pamela froze. For a moment, her breathing just stopped.

“You haven’t fully recovered yet, so there are certain things that I shouldn’t be saying,” John said as he brushed the hair off her shoulder and tidied it, his tone calm. “But you have fallen too deep.”

“No…” Pamela suddenly panicked.

“If I don’t put a stop to this, we both know how it ends.” His hands stayed gentle, but his words cut straight into her, and it hurt so much. “You should know that except for Sierra, I don’t want anyone to fall in love with me.”

That one simple sentence shattered Pamela’s heart into pieces.

She wanted to explain, but after what had just happened, there was nothing that she could say. All her words would be rendered powerless.

She had thought that when he prompted her to speak, it was because he understood her and wanted to give her special treatment and to make an exception for her. Only now did she realize it had just been a trick to draw out what she was feeling,

And she had fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.

“I’m grateful, and I really want to take good care of you,” John said. He felt a drop of liquid tall on the back of his hand. He knew it was her tears. “I will give you everything I promised you.”

“It’s fine,” Pamela said as her lips formed a bitter smile.

John said nothing more.

From the moment her tear landed on his hand, he knew that apart from Sierra, he wouldn’t care about anyone else’s feelings. When Sierra cried, his chest ached, and he wanted to find a way to comfort her.

“Go to bed early.” John saw that she was silent and knew she had understood. “Go out with your friends tomorrow and have fun. I’ll pay for everything.”
