Regrets Come Too Late (Sierra and Johnny) novel Chapter 15

Sierra couldn’t answer Holly’s question.

Holly knew exactly what Sierra was like. After tweaking the resume, she sent it back to Sierra.

Alright, all done.

Sierra downloaded it and took a look. It didn’t seem all that different, but was just phrased a bit differently.

A resume is like an unfiltered photo. You’ve got to learn to use filters and touchups,Holly explained. She knew Sierra was the type who was dependable and hardworking, but not great at selling herself. In other words, she just put her head down and let her work speak for itself.

But the working world wasn’t like college. Good grades alone weren’t enough. In most companies, how you got along with people often mattered more than doing perfect work to the companieshigherups. Even if your results were just average, being good with people could still get you promoted.

Seriously, why not just come work for me?Holly suggested. I can make you a star, model, or influencer. Whichever you want. Didn’t you use to compose music? I can find a singer and have you write songs for her.

No thanks,Sierra said. She had no interest in being a public figure, didn’t want attention, and definitely didn’t want her private life under the spotlight. All she wanted was a normal life.

If I told you to just let me take care of you, you’d turn me down anyway,Holly said, giving up with a laugh since she knew how stubborn Sierra could be. Continue with the job hunt, I guess. But if things really don’t work out, come to me.

Sierra agreed.

After hanging up, she used Holly’s revised resume to apply for jobs. It actually worked, and soon, several companies called her for interviews. Maybe her bad luck was finally over, because every interview went smoothly. She passed the first and second rounds easily.

But in the final round, something strange happened. She was rejected every time, and she wasn’t sure if it was her ability or something else.

We’re sorry. After a comprehensive evaluation, your abilities don’t match the position. You haven’t passed the final round.

Ms. Bell, we regret to inform you that you did not make it through our final interview.

After much consideration, your abilities just don’t quite match our needs

It was like they had all made some secret agreement. Every single company turned her down at the very end.

Sierra took call after call. After all the compliments she got in earlier rounds, it was crushing to keep hearing the same rejection in the end.

There was a buzz. It was another call.

She already knew it was probably another rejection. As soon as she picked up, the person on the other end spoke in formal English. Hello, Ms. Bell.

I didn’t make it past the final round, did 17Sierra asked straight out.

There was a pause. The caller hadn’t expected that. Yes.

Can I ask why?Sierra was starting to doubt herself after so many rejections. I remember my interview scores were always among the highest in the first two rounds.

You do not meet our requirements sufficiently, the caller replied.

If that was true, I wouldn’t have made it past the second round,Sierra pressed. Every company today has given me the same feedback about not being a good fit.
