Chapter 16
‘Who did I cross?‘
The only person Sierra could think of was John. No one else had that kind of influence.
Frustrated, she immediately called him, her resentment toward him reaching a new high.
“Hello, who is this?” came the secretary’s flat voice.
Sierra paused. She checked the number. It was indeed John’s private number. Why was the secretary answering?
“This is Sierra Bell.” She didn’t have time to dwell on it now. She just wanted to clarify everything. “I need to speak with John.”
The secretary glanced at John sitting in his chair, then, understanding his signal, she slowly replied, “Mr. Henderson is in a meeting. He’ll be busy for another two hours. If you have a message, I can pass it along.”
“He’s right there with you,” Sierra said firmly. He never let anyone else use his private phone, not even his secretary.
The secretary looked at John, who took the phone from her and gestured for her to leave before speaking to Sierra himself. “I thought the secretary’s answer would make it clear. I don’t want to talk to you.”
“If you hadn’t sabotaged my job hunt, I wouldn’t be calling,” Sierra said directly and went straight to the point. “Why did you have people block me from getting a job?”
“What job?” John replied.
“Don’t play dumb,” Sierra sneered.
“If you got rejected, you should be questioning your own ability, not calling me,” John said coldly. “You’ve been out of the workforce for five years. It’s normal for people to turn you down.”
Sierra didn’t believe him for a second. “Can you really say you didn’t have anyone to mess me up?”
“No,” John answered quickly. “I just told them not to lower their standards for your sake. You’re not Mrs. Henderson anymore. You don’t get special treatment.”
He didn’t say to make things difficult for her, but that message was more than enough. Everyone in their circle knew exactly
what he meant.
“Is it fun?” Sierra really couldn’t understand why he was so set on making things hard for her.
Wasn’t it his idea to divorce? Wasn’t he the one who cheated? Why was she the one who had to suffer now?
“What?” John didn’t catch what Sierra said.
Sierra hung up, knowing there was no point in saying anything anymore. She also realized how hard it would be to find a job she actually wanted.
Buzz!
It was a new message.
It was from John. “If you really want a job, I can relax the requirements and let you work at Henderson Group. After all, we used
to be married.”
Sierra didn’t reply. She knew his offer was just another way to make things hard for her.
Since finding work was hopeless, she started over. She cut out any company that was connected to John, anyone who had worked with him, and anyone in the same industry. That left only small and mid–sized companies to choose from.
She sent out her resume again and started looking for a place to live.
