looked up, and the atmosphere in the hospital ward became heavy.
Meanwhile, on Sierra’s side…
!
After Tommy went to sleep, Sierra kept working on her sketches. Watching the numbers in her bank account climb made her feel much more at ease.
Close to one in the morning, Sierra’s phone chimed. It was a message from the group chat she shared with Holly and Nicholas, called “Single or Paired but Never Third“.
Holly: [I heard Pamela ended up in the hospital yesterday. Is that true?]
Holly: [Wait, I mean the day before. Technically, it’s past midnight now.]
Nicholas: [I know about that. It’s true.]
Nicholas sent a voice message a little over ten seconds long, explaining in detail how Pamela had gotten into a car accident and how John hadn’t left Tommy and Sierra to rush to the hospital,
Holly: [Serves her right.]
Holly: [She can’t make any more trouble now when there are only a few days left.]
Holly: [Your cooling–off period ends on the twelfth this month, right? You’re getting the divorce certificate on the ⚫ thirteenth? @SierraBell]
When Sierra picked up her phone, that was the first message she saw. She glanced at the calendar and typed back. [ Looks like it.]
It had been about twenty days since they applied for the divorce.
Sierra had always worried she wouldn’t be able to adapt to life without John. While she still felt a little uneasy, from the looks of it now, she realized she had already gotten used to most of it.
She could take care of herself and Tommy as well as pay for her mother’s medical bills. She did not need him.
Holly sent another message.
[By the way, I almost forgot to tell you. When I went to the bar yesterday, I saw your dad. He told me to tell you to go see him on Wednesday. He said it’s important and it has something to do with your mom.]
Sierra stared at the screen in silence for a while.
