Sierra had completely forgotten about one thing before today: Tommy’s tuition.
If he hadn’t just been joking with John and calling him Mr. Henderson, she probably would have forgotten about it until his summer break.
Tuition and miscellaneous fees for a term added up to about tens of thousands of dollars.
John would pay for part of it, and she would pay for the other part of it.
She had to hurry up and make more money.
That night, Sierra drew up a plan for how she was going to earn more. Only after she finished did she go upstairs to wash up and go to bed.
But with that uncertainty sitting on her chest and the weight of her life on her shoulders, she couldn’t sleep well at all. Even on this rare, pleasant day, her mind kept jumping to the thought that if she were at home, she could finish one more illustration and earn a little more.
The next day, Sierra joined the group activities, then rehearsed the Wednesday night performance with a few colleagues who were going to be in the performance.
It wasn’t until four or five in the afternoon that the company car dropped them back home.
Once she got home, Sierra sent a message in her friend group chat. [Are either of you free right now?]
Nicholas replied, [I am.]
Holly replied, [Busy.]
⚫ Sierra then wrote, [I
ant to go ask my dad something, but I’m too scared to go by myself.]
After what had happened last time, Sierra was much more cautious about this kind of thing.
Jubilee’s words and the way she treated certain topics made it hard for Sierra to see what had really happened between her parents. Sierra wanted to wait until her mom woke up to talk about it, but she needed to figure out her own relationship with her dad now.
There was also something her dad had said before, about why he abandoned them in the past.
Half an hour later, Nicholas came to pick her up.
The way he was dressed was as flashy as ever. On the way to the bar, he chatted with Sierra.
“If anything comes up these days, just find me directly, Holly is super busy right now.”
“Didn’t she say she wouldn’t work for her dad for free?” Sierra asked.
Holly’s cards were still frozen. If she wanted to buy anything, she had to go through her parents. She had been angry about that for a long time.
“It’s not work,” Nicholas said as he drove, his tone easy. “I’m not really sure what she’s doing. She won’t tell me, though, and it all feels so mysterious.”
“John’s people haven’t gone looking for them lately, right?” Sierra thought of Pamela and couldn’t shake the feeling that nothing was as simple as they seemed.

Since Pamela had used John to reconnect with Holly’s dad, there was no way her goal was simply acknowledgement.
She might…be eyeing the company.
“Nope,” Nicholas answered quickly.
Sierra asked, “What about you?”
“That’s a nope, too,” Nicholas said.
His dad had called him back once, but he was no longer someone who only knew how to drift along. He could handle a lot of things himself, and he didn’t care even if they were annoying.
Sierra felt a little more at ease.
After more than half an hour, the car pulled up at the bar where her dad was forced to wash glasses.
The bar manager worked for Kenneth, and he knew both Sierra and Nicholas. When he heard they wanted to see Lucas, he took them straight to him at the back. At the same time, he discreetly passed word along to Kenneth
Kenneth relayed the news to John.
John barely reacted. “If she wants to see him, let her. Just don’t let what happened last time happen again.”
“She came with Nicholas,” Kenneth said.
The other end of the line went silent.
Kenneth waited for a reaction, then went on by himself. “If you don’t have any plans, I’ll go tell the staff.”
“Wait,” John’s cool vo ounded, unhurried as he added, “Send me a copy of their conversation later.”
