Chapter 167
Jenny knew a little about Sierra and John. Even so, she had always treated Sierra as an ordinary team member and had never tried to dig into Sierra’s private life.
But today, her phone received a message from John after he left.
Only then did she suddenly understand what her family meant when they said John saw everything. Just a few days of quiet observation had been enough for him to see straight through her concern for Sierra.
“I’ll work hard, and I won’t hold you back,” Sierra said.
She knew Jenny was treating her well. With nothing else to offer in return, all she could do was her job as well as possible.
Jenny gave a brief nod in response.
They didn’t stay and chat more after that.
After a few casual words, Jenny went to get some water while Sierra stepped outside to make a call. Even though she knew Tommy was being well looked after, she still worried as a mother.
As soon as the call connected, she greeted him first. “Hi, sweetheart. Are you doing alright over there?”
“Everything’s fine,” Tommy said as he put his tablet aside. He still had a baby face. “I just miss you a bit.”
Sierra’s heart ached a lot after hearing that. “Mom misses you, too.”
They chatted casually about everyday things in life. She asked about his meals, then about school and whether he was happy. The conversation couldn’t have been more peaceful.
. Until…
A steady, low voice cam from the other end. “Finish your milk before you keep talking to Mom.”
A clean hand appeared on the screen, holding a glass of milk. The fingers were long and neat, the nails trimmed just right. Even without seeing the owner of that hand, Sierra knew it was John.
He had been next to Tommy this whole time.
Tommy took the glass and gulped it down, then happily handed it back. “All done.”
“Good boy,” John answered.
Tommy blinked at him with his big, round eyes.
John rested his left hand on the edge of the desk and leaned back in the chair lazily. “What are you staring at me for? Aren’t you going to talk to your mom?”
“I want to tell Mom a secret.” In short, Tommy was getting rid of him.
“Go ahead,” John said.
Tommy blinked some more. “I can’t with you here.”
John lifted his brows a little. “I’m not covering your mouth.”
Tommy realized his dad could be quite shameless at times. He opened his small mouth and told the truth. “You’re staying here on purpose because you want to hear me talk to Mommy, aren’t you?”

“1
“You could say that,” John said as he glanced at the tablet, taking in every expression on Sierra’s face. “Since neither of you wants anything to do with me lately, I have no idea if you’ll talk about me badly behind my back.”
“Mr. Henderson.” Tommy was so annoyed that he even changed what he called him.
“Mm?” John paused.
“Don’t think everyone thinks like you,” Tommy said, his little face serious. “If Mom and I really wanted to talk about you, we wouldn’t bother hiding it.”
“Mr. Henderson?” John repeated how Tommy called him.
Tommy looked innocent. “Yeah?”
John let out a small laugh and reached out to pat Tommy on the head, his tone half–amused and half–lecturing. Good. Remember to call me next time you need a favor.”
Tommy fell silent.
Satisfied with the defeated look on his face, John stood up and stopped teasing him.
