Nicholas chatted idly with Sierra, saying whatever came to mind just to distract her and ease her mood.
Buzz! Buzz!
Suddenly, his phone vibrated.
Both looked at where the sound was coming from.
Nicholas took his phone from his pocket. A faint change of expression flashed through his eyes when he saw the caller, then he hung up without hesitation.
“Who was that?” Sierra asked.
“It’s just a sales call,” Nicholas answered.
Sierra doubted it.
Nicholas sounded completely serious, though. “I bought something a while back. Ever since then, I have kept getting nuisance calls. I can’t even block all of their numbers.”
Sierra didn’t think much of it and simply took his words as the truth.
The next second, his phone sounded again. This time, it was a text message. The sender was his father. There was only one line.
[Be back within half an hour, or I’ll agree to cooperate with John Henderson.]
Nicholas fell silent.
“If you have something to do, you should go,” Sierra said. She could tell from his expression that the message was important. “I’m going to be fine here.”
“It’s just a message from my dad,” Nicholas said, trying to hide it. “He wants me to go home for a blind date. It’s annoying.”
Sierra tested the waters. “Did you two make up?”
“Never in this life,” Nicholas said, growing impatient the moment he mentioned his father. Deep down, he had never liked his father. “Don’t worry about him. He can do whatever he wants.”
Sierra didn’t try to change his mind.
She and Holly only knew the rough outline of what had happened between Nicholas and Michael. They believed that other than the conflicts they knew about, Nicholas had to be hiding something more from them. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have treated Michael with such cold apathy for so many years.
They never asked. Everyone had secrets and privacy.
They were friends, and friends should respect one another even more.
“Let’s go.” Sierra tucked Anna in. “I’ll take you to dinner.”
“Let’s go,” Nicholas said in agreement at once. He didn’t take the earlier call or the text to heart at all.
John watched with his own eyes as the two of them left together and even arranged to have dinner. His gaze grew darker.

He told Robin to get in and gave Robin an order. “No matter what method you use, ruin Sierra and Nicholas’s dinner. Compensate the owner ten times over for any damage the restaurant suffers.”
“Alright,” Robin replied.
Half an hour later, Sierra bought fresh ingredients and took Nicholas back to her place. Given her current finances, Nicholas would definitely go back and settle the bill behind her back if she treated Nicholas to something good.
If she took him somewhere more average, she might as well cook for him herself.
The bodyguard shadowing them reported all this to Robin.
Robin was in a bind. After thinking it over again and again, he braced himself and went to the CEO’s office.
When he went in, he didn’t speak right away. He stood in front of John’s desk, looking like he had something to
say.
“Is there something you need to report?” John asked, still dealing with important company matters.
“The place Ms. Bell and Mr. Young are having dinner is somewhere our people can’t cause any trouble.” Robin was panicking inside, but his face stayed calm.
John paused and thought it through. The answer came to him at once. “Her home?”
“Yes,” Robin answered.
He felt fortunate, as he had many times before, to have such a remarkably smart boss. John understood what he was trying to say, even though there were many times when he couldn’t express it.
John’s hand, resting on the keyboard, went still. The air around him dropped to a terrifying chill.
The next moment, he stood up.
He grabbed his suit jacket and walked out of the office.
