“You can give up already. No permission from me,” Tommy said to John with utter seriousness through his watch.
“Your mom’s company had an accident at their anniversary party tonight,” John said, deciding to sacrifice his son just so he could get in. “She was badly hurt and didn’t get treated before coming home.”
Tommy’s heart skipped a beat. “Weren’t you there?”
“The chandelier fell. I was too far away to get to her in time,” John replied, his voice grave.
Tommy went quiet.
Normally, he could spot the holes in a story right away. But his head was now full of images of Sierra getting hurt, and his thoughts were not as sharp as usual. “Really?”
“Really,” John said, sounding serious.
Tommy hung up and immediately called Sierra. The phone on the sofa buzzed and buzzed, but Sierra didn’t hear it as she was
still in the shower.
John, standing at the door, could hear it clearly. His hand tightened around his phone without him noticing.
He hoped Sierra would be in the shower or blow–drying her hair and wouldn’t hear the call.
This time, luck stood on his side. The phone rang for a while before going silent. Right after that, his own phone lit up with
Tommy’s name.
“I can let you go in, but you’re not allowed to yell at Mom.”
“Alright,” John said with a serious expression on his face.
“And you’re not allowed to touch her,” Tommy said as he pulled his blanket away and put on his slippers.
“If your mom faints on the floor, how am I supposed to take her to the hospital without touching her? Or bandage a wound?” John said, sly as ever.
Tommy paused halfway down the stairs.
“If you keep hesitating and if your mom’s life really is in danger…” John let the sentence hang.
Tommy’s eyes widened, and he charged downstairs. “After you get in, you have to tell me how Mom is doing. Better yet, turn on
a video call.”
“Fine,” John agreed. “What’s the code for the door?”
After the last time he opened the door with a key, Sierra had changed the lock to a keypad.
Tommy really did not want to say it, but for his mom’s safety, he told John anyway. He could just change it again after John left. My birthday plus the last four digits of Mom’s phone number.”
John gave him a hum and hung up. He even deliberately put his phone on silent so he would not be interrupted when it was time
to talk.
Tommy rushed downstairs, told Grant he needed to go to Maple Residences before heading out to the garage. Grant tried calling John to ask what was going on, but Tommy simply pulled up his call log and showed it to him.
“Dad is treating Mom’s injury. He’s really busy.”
Grant hesitated, but when John didn’t pick up, he still drove Tommy over.
Once they were in the car, Tommy called his dad again. He did not fully believe John, but he had to let John in for now just to be
“
John entered the code, opened the door, and then shut it behind him with a dull thud.
Sierra thought she heard something when she was in the shower. She paused, listening carefully, but heard nothing else after at
