Chapter 215

The moment Sierra walked into the pantry, the people who had been gossiping about her just now all stiffened, their faces tightening as they instinctively straightened up in their seats and looked at her.
Sierra didn’t give them a single glance.
The break room went quiet, except for the sound of the water running into her cup.
“Sierra, getting some water?” Cindy was one of the people who had been talking. She had no idea whether Sierra had heard anything just now, so she tested the waters.
“Yeah.” Sierra’s tone was flat.
Cindy felt even less sure of herself, a vague sense of guilt rising in her chest.
“Sit with us for a while.” Cindy tried again. “You can take a break, slack off a little.”
“If she really slacks off here instead of going back to work, people in the department will probably start saying she doesn’t work hard, that she’s always slacking, that people with status can get away with anything,” Leona said bluntly.
“Everyone can see how capable you are. If anyone talks like that, we’ll shut them down.”
“Exactly! Anyone who talks trash about you is going to have a problem with me.”
“Don’t worry, you have us.”
At first, Sierra didn’t plan to bother with what they had said. She was ready to treat it like nothing and let it go.
However, she didn’t expect them to be so shameless.
She stopped, turned around, and looked at them. The usual warmth and politeness were gone from her expression.
“Aren’t you the ones who gossiped behind my back?”
Their expressions immediately darkened.
Cindy forced out a faint smile. “I’ve always thought of you as a friend. I won’t say that about you.”
“Maybe someone’s trying to drive a wedge between you two.” The others joined in, playing along.
Sierra couldn’t be bothered to respond to them. She picked up her cup and walked out, leaving them with the figure of a distant,
indifferent woman.
The colder Sierra was, the more lost Cindy felt. She would rather Sierra argue with her and fall out with her in the open than deal
with this.
Leona asked Sierra, “Why not yell at them?”
“Someone once told me not to waste energy confronting idiots,” Sierra said. Her mood had completely settled by now. “People like that have nothing but waste in their heads. It’s pointless to say anything more to them.”
Leona thought it over.
It did seem that way.
Not long after Sierra returned to her desk, Cindy and the others came back. Each of them glanced at Sierra. They didn’t say anything, but their eyes were full of guilt.
“Sierra, are you angry at me?” Cindy lowered her voice after she sat down. “I really didn’t gossip about you behind your back.”
“Yeah.” Sierra believed that oh–so wholeheartedly.

Cindy rarely spoke badly about others directly, because she was much better at steering the topic so that others would say the things she wanted to hear. That way, even if the person there was gossiping about overheard, she could keep herself spotless.
Just like earlier.
