“Digging up information and dealing with people face to face are two different things,” Lucy said to Kenneth bluntly. “You won’t get it, so I won’t hold it against you.”

She left both Kenneth and John, not caring about what the two were thinking. As soon as she walked out of the bar, waved down a cab and climbed in.

She leaned back, her mind stuck on what she had just found out.

The disturbing images that had flashed across the screen.

Both matched everything about her mentor.

If Anna really was the person Lucy had known online for nearly a decade, then what had happened after she vanished that made her change her name? Had she buried the past because it hurt too much? Or because she didn’t want anyone to find out?

All kinds of thoughts appeared in her mind.

In the end, she decided to talk to Sierra the next day. She would decide whether to crack the defenses and pull the data out after

Lucy’s sudden exit makes Kenneth very suspicious. He glanced at the drink she had barely touched and asked John, “Don’t you think Lucy is acting a little weird today?”

She had barely touched her favorite drink. Then, she left without warning. She usually liked being the last one to leave, right?

“She probably found something in Anna’s file,” John said calmly. “It might be tied to her, or to someone she knows.”

“Then why not press her?” Kenneth asked.

“She knows where the line is.” John stood and straightened his clothes. He trusted Lucy. “If she doesn’t want to talk, she has her reasons. All we need to do is wait.”

Kenneth hesitated. “What if she finds out something and doesn’t tell you?”

“If she stays quiet, it means Anna’s file is even more complicated than I thought,” John said, seeing right through everything. Not much could make Lucy walk away from the money and from us without a word.”

He only needed Lucy as an entry point to get a rough sense of who Anna was. Whether she talked or not didn’t matter.

Kenneth paused, once again reminded that John’s mind ran sharper than most.

They left the bar and went to their own cars. When John checked the time and saw it was almost ten, he finally turned his phone back on. He opened his chat with Sierra and then sent her a message.

[My phone battery’s dead. J

Sierra was working on her illustration and didn’t notice the message. By the time she did, it was already after two in the morning.

She stared at the words he sent her, and a reply already formed in her mind.

Not a single word about the divorce certificate?

She swallowed the feelings inside of her, washed up, and went to bed. After how had reacted twice that day, she already knew
