“We met five years ago at your wedding with John,” Lucy said to Sierra as she stood in Sierra’s doorway.

The slight lift at the corners of her eyes made her look especially pretty.

“You forgot.”

Sierra tried hard to remember.

Nothing.

“Back then, I tried to hit on you. John even glared at me,” Lucy said.

Sierra paused.

Their wedding? Flirting?

Lucy pulled out her phone and brought up an old photo, then held it out to Sierra. “Look at this. Does this ring a bell?”

Sierra stared at the screen. The photo showed a girl with shoulder–length choppy hair and a pair of headphones around her neck, smiling with bright energy and a streak of rascal–like attitude.

Something clicked. Sierra looked up at her in disbelief. “You… You’re Lucy?”

“Do I look even more handsome now?” Lucy brushed back her hair. A charming aura surrounded her naturally.

“You look great either way.” Sierra stepped aside. “Come in.”

Sierra hadn’t seen Lucy many times. Other than during the wedding, they had only met a few times after that.

Back then, Lucy’s clothes and hairstyle had been completely different. No wonder Sierra couldn’t recognize her.

Lucy used to look cool, but still a woman. Now, she was so androgynously handsome it was hard to tell at a glance whether she

was even a man or a woman.

After Lucy walked in, her eyes swept the room. When she saw that the place was even smaller than her own, she couldn’t help herself and asked, “John lets you and Tommy live here?”

“I picked this place myself,” Sierra said.

That confused Lucy. She didn’t know the details of their divorce. All she knew was that John had a scandal with some woman called Pamela, and after that, they started the divorce proceedings.

“I only have coffee, milk, and tea at home. What do you want?” Sierra asked as she grabbed a cup. She didn’t know Lucy well, only that Lucy and John were close.

“Don’t worry about it. Plain water’s fine.” Lucy took the cup from Sierra’s hand and went to fill it herself. “I actually came today because I wanted to ask you something.”

“Go ahead.” Sierra sat down with her on the couch

Lucy wrapped both hands around the cup. “How much do you know about your mom?”

Sierra blinked.

“After coming back this time, I only realized that your mom is a lot like an old friend of mine,” Lucy said. She didn’t mention John asking her to look into it. “But that friend lived a pretty wild life. That doesn’t match what your mom is like. She seems content with a quiet life.”

“My mom’s over forty,” Sierra said.
