The doctor had said Anna would wake up within two months at most, but so much time had passed with no sign of her wihing On top of that, both Sierra and Tommy were still registered under John’s household registration. Sneaking away without a word was impossible.

Sierra didn’t care about herself, but Tommy needed to go to school. If she wanted to take Tommy away, John would have to agree with his own free will.

“Did you ever ask him why he got mixed up with Pamela?” Holly asked.

“I did.” Sierra could still hear his answer. “He said he’d tell me once I’m back with him.”

Holly put a hand to her forehead. She really had no idea how someone like John would get involved with Pamela.

While they were talking, John came back. He headed straight toward Sierra.

When Tommy saw him, he raised his head and said, “Uncle John! You’re back!”

Holly looked at the situation with confused eyes.

Uncle John?

“I need to talk to your mom about something. Do you want to go upstairs on your own, or should I have Grant take you up?” John tapped a finger lightly against Tommy’s forehead.

He was already used to being called Uncle John by now.

Tommy instinctively looked at Sierra.

Sierra gave him a small nod. She knew John was probably going to talk about what had happened with the car.

A short while later, only three people were left in the courtyard. John looked at Sierra, and there was something different in his

eyes.

Sierra noticed it. “What is it?”

“The truck driver admitted someone hired him.” John didn’t say directly who it was. “The target was you.”

Sierra froze.

She had guessed as much.

“Holly’s car is still being examined. The full report will probably be ready tomorrow morning,” John went on.

“Was it my dad, or your dad?” Sierra asked bluntly.

She had wondered if it might have something to do with her finding her mother’s deeds, but her call with Brenda had revealed nothing new. Even if there was a problem related to that, there hadn’t been enough time for anyone to make a move.

The only people who made sense were Lucas, who had been following them, or Danny, whom she had recently crossed.

“On the surface, it was your dad.” John didn’t hide it. His eyes were darker than she had ever seen. “My dad may have had a hand in it behind the scenes, too.”

“If it turns out they both took part in it…” Sierra hesitated. “Can I press charges against both of them at the same time?”

Even if John didn’t get along with them, they were still father and son.

Planning a murder and tossing someone in the water to torture them were two completely different things.

“You can, but your chances aren’t great with Danny,” John said, explaining the reason. “Solomon will step in. He’s very good at
