Chapter 279
Did Sierra feel anything from what John had just said?
Of course. Her heart wasn’t made of stone, and she had no defense against words like that.
Was she touched?
Yes. He really did care about her.
Would she get back together with him?
Sierra hesitated briefly after the question, then snapped back to reality when her rationality returned to her.
His words were warm, but the ones he had spoken before all of this had been just as sharp. She cared too much about the sentences that had denied her worth, cared so much that she forced down what little warmth in her heart that almost transformed into passion once more.
“When you’ve decided, tell me,” John said, unaware of everything that had flashed through Sierra’s mind in those few seconds. “Preferably within a week.”
“Just handle it your way.” Sierra believed he wouldn’t play favorites. Anyway, she knew she had no chance if she went up against the Henderson family alone. “I trust you.”
John nodded. “Alright.”
“Sure,” Sierra replied.
Their conversation was as calm as possible, yet Holly found it to be like the calm before a storm. She had the sense that once this calm broke, the clash between the two of them would be the fiercest one yet.
She did not know how long this peace would last. She did not know how strong the coming storm would be.
But she knew one thing.
She knew that right now, she felt a bit like a third wheel…
“Tommy leaves early Monday to take the bus to summer camp. Why don’t you stay here these two nights?” John said carefully, as if asking for her opinion. “You two can sleep in the master bedroom. I’ll sleep in the guest room.”
Sierra raised her eyes.
She was still thinking about how to answer it when John took her hand. His warm palm settled over the back of her hand, his voice gentle and full of quiet anticipation. “Is that alright?”
Sierra agreed. “I guess.”
If he was willing to sit down and talk properly, she was willing to meet him halfway. When the time was right and his emotions were steady, she would bring up the peaceful divorce again.
John was not someone you could agitate.
“Lucy, take Holly home after dinner,” John said, turning his head to look at the person sitting on the garden railing.
Lucy simply gave him an “okay” hand gesture.
John turned back to Holly. “This started because of me, and you got a big scare out of it. I’ll have a new car sent over to make it up to you in a couple of days. Remember to sign for it.”
Holly’s feelings grew even more complicated.
It was not because John could casually give away a new car,
but because of what he had said.

John did not say he was paying her back because of Sierra. Instead, he shouldered everything himself. The car was not some kind of cheap compensation, but to make up for the fright.
She had seen too many awful people in this circle, twisting things to avoid responsibility, saying anything for their own gain. She had really seen all kinds of people in her life.
