“Why do you look so down, then?” the coworker asked, somewhere between concern and curiosity.
Sierra blurted out without thinking as she stared into the void, “He has a terminal illness and is dying.”
Leona went silent.
John would probably have been just as speechless if he were here.
The coworker gasped and asked what kind of illness he had. Sierra didn’t answer. She used exhaustion as an excuse and went back to her room to sleep.
As expected, she didn’t sleep at all.
Her mind just kept going over every happy memory with John the whole night. She tried to think about something else, anything but that. But just like before, nothing worked. She even started to suspect that the alcohol had been tampered with on John’s orders.
It was almost dawn by the time the buzz wore off, and she finally drifted into a light sleep.
“Sierra, we need to go to Henderson Group,” Leona called her again and again.
Sierra forced her eyes open. Despite a terrible night’s sleep, leaving her with a splitting headache and aching all over, she forced herself to get up and get herself ready for work.
Half an hour later, she and Leona were in a cab on their way to Henderson Group. The other coworker, worried about being late if she waited for Sierra, had already left earlier in a separate cab.
“Thanks for last night,” Sierra said, looking at Leona. She hadn’t completely blacked out and still remembered everything.” When we’re back in Jade City, I’ll take you out for dinner.”
Leona didn’t even pretend. “I want meat.”
“Eat as much as you want,” Sierra said.
After that, the two of them fell quiet.
Seeing that Leona was acting just as usual, Sierra pressed her lips and tested the waters. “You don’t blame me for hiding who l am from you?”
“What’s there to blame?” Leona answered. She was pretty sensible about this. “Everyone has secrets they don’t want other people to know. Your identity is your own privacy. Whether you tell anyone or not is your choice.”
Sierra finally let out the sigh she had been holding on to.
Leona then asked, “You remained quiet about it because you didn’t want people to assume you secured your job solely through a connection, correct?”
“Yes,” Sierra admitted.
“I’ve been keeping something from you, too,” Leona said, wanting to ease Sierra’s guilt and share one of her own secrets. Wendy is my half–sister on my father’s side.”
Sierra stared at her. “What?”
Leona laughed. “You never imagined someone ordinary like me could be connected to that Marshall family, did you?“.
“You’re not ordinary at all,” Sierra said, completely serious. She meant every word as she praised Leona. “It’s uncommon to find someone who speaks their mind, defends others, and is truly loyal.”
“If you keep complimenting me like that, I’m going to get full of myself,” Leona said, lifting her brow

“I’m serious,” Sierra said.
Leona smiled. After a while, she spoke again, this time more solemn. “Relax. Everything about you and Mr. Henderson stays with me. I won’t say a word, no matter who asks.”
“Thank you,” Sierra said. She had never worried that Leona would gossip.
Roughly twenty minutes later, they arrived at Henderson Group’s Harbor City branch office.
They took the elevator up to the floor where Games Divisions Group One was located. There were still about ten minutes before work officially started.
A quick look around, and Sierra only saw about half the staff had shown up. None of the technical experts who were supposed to
