Sierra was infuriated when she heard John’s words. “Can you stop being so shameless?”

“This is my legal right,” John replied unhurriedly, his gaze deep. “How is that shameless?”

Sierra wanted to say something, but the words wouldn’t come. He always had a reasonable argument ready no matter what she said, pushing her into a corner and leaving her with nothing to say.

“I hope we can settle this properly. Otherwise…” John paused. “You might really see what you call shameless.”

As long as he could keep her by his side, he was willing to use any means necessary. Even if it made her hate him.

“You’ve never liked your parents, but don’t you see what you’re doing right now is exactly what they do?” Sierra tried another angle, hoping to move him. “You’re using any means to get what you want, just like they did.”

John’s hands froze for a moment.

After a long silence, he finally answered, “Maybe so.”

“I only want a divorce. I won’t keep you from seeing Tommy,” Sierra went on. She knew she couldn’t win against him by force, so all she could do was try to persuade him with words. “I won’t say anything negative about you to him, either.”

“He was never the reason why I didn’t want a divorce,” John said at last.

Sierra’s brows frowned slightly.

John’s eyes settled on her, looking at every inch of her face. He saw confusion, distance, resentment, and every emotion except the love she had once felt. The more things were that way, the more he wanted to keep her.

“It’s because of you, and only you,” he repeated the words he had said before.

Sierra’s lips moved. A rush of emotions swept through her heart. There was a brief warmth in being chosen repeatedly, but more than anything, there was fear. Fear of a marriage she could not escape.

If there had been no Pamela, if he had never said those things that cut at her pride, if he had said this line in the middle of a normal argument…

Then, she could have forgiven everything. She could have thrown herself into his arms and told him she did not want to fight anymore.

“I’m tired.” Her voice grew calmer. “I can’t ignore what happened before, and I can’t accept that you plan to take care of Pamela for the rest of her life.”

A piercing pain struck John’s chest, and a somber expression flickered in his dark eyes.

“I won’t change my mind about the divorce,” Sierra said. “If you really refuse to finalize the divorce papers with me, then I’ll just have to find another way to show you how determined I am.”

John watched her in silence, saying nothing. Too many emotions were hidden in his eyes.

“It’s late. I’m going back to sleep.” Sierra changed back into her own clothes and walked out of the room, leaving John there

alone.

In the empty hallway, Sierra walked very slowly.

She fared no better than John did. Her chest ached, and a jumble of emotions crowded her mind.
