Sierra answered John almost robotically. “She’s fine. About as well as us, now.”

Anna had no trouble with normal conversations, but she probably couldn’t yell or scream yet.

“Sierra.” John lowered his voice when he said her name.

She turned to look at him. “What is it?”

He met her eyes, asking even though he already knew what the answer should be. “Now that your mom is awake, have you thought about taking her and Tommy and leaving?”

If she answered honestly, he could sit down and talk it through with her.

If she lied, then she couldn’t blame him for not caring about what she felt.

“Why are you suddenly asking that?” Sierra didn’t answer him head–on.

“Just answer me first.” John wasn’t someone whose attention could be shifted unless he allowed it.

“For now, no.” Sierra didn’t know why he was asking, so she could only tell him a half–truth. “But if you treat me badly, if you don’t stick to what you promised me, then my answer will be different.”

What she called treating her well and what John thought of as treating her well weren’t the same thing. So, her leaving was already predetermined.

Looking at how distant she seemed, John simply said, “Then let’s both keep our promises.”

“I’m going back to the hospital.” Sierra cut the topic off. She didn’t want to stay here a second longer than she had to. “My mom has rehab tomorrow. I need to get over there.”

“You’re not staying here tonight?” John asked.

Sierra didn’t hesitate. “No.”

His dark eyes stayed on her, as dark as the night sky above. She was already planning how to cut ties with him. She couldn’t even stand to spend one night here.

“What is it…?” Sierra’s heart tightened. She felt as if everything in her head had been exposed under his gaze.

“I’ll drive you.” John didn’t say anything more. He wanted to see just how well Sierra could hide things. “I’ll go see Anna, too.”

“There’s no need for that.” Sierra tried to refuse.

“Let’s go.” John didn’t back off.

“My mom is already asleep this late at night,” Sierra explained. “If you want to see her, you can come tomorrow. It’s the weekend, anyway.”

“Seeing her is one reason. The main thing is I don’t feel safe with you driving there alone this late at night.” John reached out and gently tucked her hair behind her ear, his tone endlessly gentle. “Come on.”

If she kept refusing, it would look like she was being intentional.

The moment she sat in the car beside him, she couldn’t help thinking about how she was supposed to deal with John once the divorce went to court. With his resources, it would be easy for him to find them even if she took Tommy and her mom and ran.

“What are you thinking about? You have quite the expression on your face,” John asked as he noticed her expression.

“Nothing.” Sierra didn’t explain.

Sierra’s heart skipped a beat, and her whole body went stiff for a second.

“Just teasing you.” From her expression, John knew he was close, but he didn’t let anything show. “After Anna goes to sleep tonight, you can use the lounge in the office upstairs. It has a better setup than the ward.”
