Jenny noticed the shift in Sierra’s mood as the words reached their ears. “Ignore that kind of gossip. They’re not you. They have no idea what you’re dealing with or problems.”

“Sure,” Sierra answered.

The biggest thing she had gained from working at Origin Games was probably meeting friends like Jenny and Leona, even if they could only accompany her for a while in life’s journey.

“Sis Jenny.” Sierra could not hold it in.

“Yeah?” Jenny replied.

Sierra looked at her with mixed feelings. “You don’t blame me?”

Jenny talked to her the way she would to a younger sister. “What would I blame you for?”

“You’ve been so serious about training me and teaching me, and now I’m dumping this whole mess on you.”

Sierra really did feel guilty, but there was just no way to take care of everything at once sometimes.

“You’re a responsible person. If you weren’t backed into a corner, you wouldn’t be making this choice,” Jenny said to Sierra from her heart. Sierra was the easiest person she had ever mentored. “Don’t overthink it.”

“Thanks,” Sierra said softly.

When Sierra was ready to leave, Sierra hugged Jenny.

Only after she finished all the formalities did she go to John’s office and hand him the form for his signature. John signed without a moment’s hesitation. As he passed the paper back, he spoke as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

“Wait for me for a little more. When I’m done, I’ll go back to the hospital with you.”

“What about the penalty fee?” Sierra asked.

“No need to pay for it,” John said.

Sierra made a quiet sound of confusion.

She clearly remembered that when she first saw he had come over to run things here and she wanted to resign, she was told she had to pay a penalty.

“The penalty fee is just a clause in the contract. Whether it’s enforced or not is up to the company.” John sounded perfectly calm. “I only used it to scare you into staying.”

Sierra didn’t even have the energy to get angry anymore. Her voice stayed calm as she asked, “If my mom hadn’t woken up, would I still have had to pay for it?”

John lifted his eyes. After a brief silence, he told the truth. “Yes.”

Holding the resignation slip with his signature, Sierra turned and walked out. She understood now that the penalty clause had always just been a leash to keep her here. She had to pay it earlier because she couldn’t afford it.

Now that her mom had woken up and this amount of money was nothing but pocket change for her, she didn’t have to pay it

anymore.

“I need ten more minutes to wrap up. When you’re done, give me a few minutes,” John called after Sierra’s figure as she was leaving.

Sierra didn’t look back. She simply took the resignation form to human resources, got her confirmation of resignation, finished the handover, and then walked out of the building.

A black car rolled to a stop right in front of her.

“I knew you wouldn’t obediently sit around and wait,” John said, a hint of indulgence in his tone. He got out, guided her into the car, then told the driver, “The hospital.”

Sierra didn’t say a single word. She simply watched the steady stream of cars and people outside the window, her thoughts drifting farther and farther away, and only came back to herself when they reached the hospital.

John got out with her, his hand naturally holding hers. “The whole penalty fee thing was me being selfish. Can you forgive me for this once?”

Sierra ignored him and quickened her pace toward the ward. John stayed right behind her without falling a single step behind.

When they reached Anna’s ward, Dr. Smith was in the middle of updating Anna on her condition. He greeted Sierra and John when they walked in and then continued, “Your recovery is doing very well, Ms. Anna. You’ll be ready to be discharged in about a week.”

“Really?” Sierra was a little surprised.
