John was about to say something else to Robin when the phone on his bedside cabinet started buzzing. He picked it up, saw Pamela’s name on the screen, and answered without hesitation.
His tone was as cool and distant as ever as he asked, “What is it?”
Knowing Pamela, calling at this time probably meant she didn’t want him to spend the twenty–sixth with Sierra.
“Where are you? I have something very important to talk to you about.” After getting nowhere with Sierra, Pamela had finally gotten the courage to call him.
“Harbor City,” John said.
“Come back for a bit,” Pamela said.
“I can’t go back right now. If you have something to say, say it on the phone.” John’s expression did not change.
“John, don’t forget your promise…” Pamela tried to bring that up again.
“You don’t need to bring that promise up every time.” John’s voice stayed flat. “I’m in the hospital. The doctor won’t discharge me.”
Hearing that, Pamela had no choice but to ask him to book her a flight so she could come talk to him in person.
John told Robin to book it.
That settled it.
Robin had been watching him the whole time, wanting to speak and holding back. “Sir…”
John’s voice was quiet. “What is it?”
“When you stabbed yourself this time, did you also think about how Pamela might drag you back to Jade City on Ms. Bell’s birthday?” Robin asked, stumbling over the words.
“You’re overthinking things,” John said, his eyes unchanged.
“Really?” Robin asked again.
John did not answer. Instead, he asked, “Too much free time on hand?”
The more he acted that way, the more sure Robin became. John had definitely planned that.
John spent Sierra’s birthday with her every year. With Pamela suddenly in the mix this year, he had simply made it so that the stabbing could achieve multiple goals at once.
Robin could guess whatever he wanted, but he would never know the answer.
That night, Pamela arrived and went up to the inpatient wing using the address Robin had sent her.
When Robin saw her message asking him to come down and bring her up to the ward, he felt a hint of unease. “Sir, is it really alright for Pamela to know you’re injured?”
“It’s fine.” John sat on the hospital bed, the color on his face better than before. “I’m almost recovered, anyway.”
Robin fell silent.
Did he get the wrong dates for his discharge? He still had two weeks left!
Robin grumbled to himself, but he still went down and brought Pamela in.

When Pamela stepped into the ward and saw the man on the hospital bed with healthy colors on his face and spirited, there was doubt in Pamela’s mind. Was John really sick?
“What did you come to see me about?” John looked at her and asked directly.
Pamela couldn’t stand the pressure exuding from his eyes, but when she thought of what she was about to say, her hands were filled with sweat.
“Ms. Sanders, say whatever you need to say and as soon as you can,” Robin cut in, his face stern. “Mr. Henderson is due for tests later.”
Pamela kept her eyes on John. Only after she forced herself to steady did she speak.““You’ve always wanted to use a sum of money to settle the debt you owe me for saving your life, haven’t you?”
“Yes,” John said.
He didn’t know why she had brought this up, but that part was true.
