“There’s something I’ve always been curious about,” Kenneth said as he dropped into the chair beside John. “Solomon hides anyone he likes, so no one can use that person against him. You do the exact opposite. You act like you’re worried that no one will ignore the fact that you love Sierra.”

John looked out at the darkening sky, not bothering to conceal his own thoughts. “When you like someone, you want everyone to know.”

Kenneth went silent for a beat.

“Then, do you still like Sierra?”

“I don’t waste time on people who don’t matter.” John’s answer was indirect, but it said enough to answer Kenneth’s question.

“Then why get divorced?” Kenneth pushed the question

John shot him a look and didn’t respond.

Kenneth kept going. “Is Pamela really that important? Important enough to toss aside the woman you’ve spoiled for so many years?”

“I won’t be the same man as I am now without her,” John said. He didn’t shy away from the topic. “And there would never have been a Sierra whom I doted so much on.”

“What did she do? Did she save your life or drag you out of some mess when you were still young?” Kenneth’s curiosity only grew. “Or something even worse?”

John said nothing.

Kenneth stared at him, clearly wanting an answer.

“The ring?” John cut him off and changed the topic.

Kenneth immediately took out a velvet box from inside his jacket and handed it over. John clasped his hand around it and left.

He had just gotten into the car when a call came in from home, reporting that Sierra had already picked Tommy up.

“Maple Residences,” John told the driver.

Half an hour later, Sierra brought Tommy into their new home.

She had bought him a small cake he loved. After lighting the candle, she pulled him into her arms. “Does it feel weird for your first time living in such a small apartment?”

“No.” Tommy’s small face lit up with a smile. “I’m good as long as Mommy’s around, no matter where we are.”

“Good boy.” Warmth spread through Sierra’s heart. “I promise you’ll live in a big house again one day.”

“Wrong,” Tommy said in a soft voice,

Sierra paused. “What?”

“It’ll be me who lets Mommy live in a big house again.” His face was all smiles. “I’ll make you happier than you were with Dad Happier and more relaxed.”

Sierra tapped the tip of his nose. “You little rascal.”

Tommy laughed in her arms, and they blew out the candle together.

The two had just sat down at the table when a knock sounded at the door. Sierra hesitated, then went to open it. The moment she saw John, she shut it again without hesitation, only for him to push it back open easily.

She stopped struggling, knowing she could not win. “What are you doing here?”

“Mr. Rogers said you picked Tommy up,” John said as he walked inside with steady steps. “I should at least come and check if he’s living here comfortably.”

As he spoke, his gaze landed on Tommy sitting at the table. Before John could ask, Tommy already lifted his head and answered the question.

“I’m comfortable. As long as I’m with Mommy, I can live anywhere.”

“You hear that?” Sierra only wanted John gone.
