Chapter 469
“No,” Sierra refused without hesitation.
She had wondered why Maxwell had seemed so polite at first. So, this was it. He had only maintained some courtesy before getting serious.
Maxwell’s expression did not change. His voice was as cold as winter. “I’m not joking. With your ability, you’re not qualified to inherit those shares. The sooner you give them up, the better it will be for everyone.”
“Whether I’m capable is for me to decide. It has nothing to do with you.” Sierra stayed calm and firm.
“As compensation, if you give up those shares, I can transfer ten million dollars to your account every year.” Maxwell named his price with the ease of someone used to being in control. “You can stay out of the family’s power struggle, and I can save myself
the trouble.”
“I want the shares, but not because of money.” Sierra meant every word.
If money had been what mattered to her, she never would have asked John for a divorce in the first place. To her, some things mattered more than money.
Maxwell looked at her, puzzled. “Then what is it?”
Sierra met his eyes and said every word clearly. “To take back what should have belonged to my mother and reclaim everything she was forced to give up here back then.”
“The King family is more complicated than you think,” Maxwell reminded her. “Forget me. You can’t even measure up to Joey.”
Sierra did not care. “Anything else?”
Seeing that they were family, Maxwell spoke a little more. “If you really want to help Aunt Anna get those shares back, then
don’t divorce John Henderson. With him by your side, a lot of people will think twice.”
“That’s none of your concern.” Sierra stood as she spoke.
If she had been willing to stay married for that reason, then she would have agreed when he asked her to accept Pamela’s
existence.
You only live once. There were things that one had to be determined about.
At least for now, she still cared about everything that had happened.
Sierra’s tone was cool. “Now that you’ve seen me, you can go back.”
Their conversation began with an odd calm. Each of them had something major to tell the other, yet neither knew where to start.
John looked at Sierra, who was distant toward him. After thinking for a moment, he took two steps closer. “When are you planning to go back to Jade City? After you get your mother’s shares, or after Tommy finishes this semester?”
Sierra gave him the same answer she always had. “I’m not going back.”
“You probably already know about Pamela.” John’s eyes stayed on her face. “She wasn’t my savior. From now on, I don’t owe her any so–called debt.”
“This Pamela is gone. What about the next one?” Sierra didn’t say it outright.
She had the same concern Kenneth did. She was afraid too much shock would reopen John’s old wound, so she decided to reveal
the truth to him little by little.
John paused.
