Regrets Come Too Late (Sierra and Johnny) novel Chapter 48

I’m worried about Tommy, so I came to check on him.

John’s voice was very gentle. He stood as he spoke, the presence from his tall figure filling the room.

His dark eyes glanced at Sierra’s face before he added, Close the doors and windows. I’ll head over now.

Can you come back fast?

A crack of thunder boomed outside all of a sudden when she was halfway through, cutting her off.

Then, she screamed.

At that same moment, Sierra was frightened too.

John saw it, but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he calmed Pamela despite her acting scared over the phone with a calm tone until her breathing smoothed out. Only then did he hang up.

As he was about to leave, he noticed how stiff Sierra’s shoulders still were and spoke offhandedly. If you’re scared, put your headphones on.

I don’t need you worrying about me,Sierra said as she forced the fear back down. Go back and keep your Mrs. Henderson company. Stop standing here getting in my way.

She had barely finished when another booming thunder roared.

This time, Sierra didn’t show any reaction at all.

John did not stay. He played with his phone between his fingers before stepping out of the small apartment that looked so out of place with the person he was. By the time he got back into the car downstairs, another streak of lightning tore across the sky.

He glanced toward the floor where Sierra lived and said, Call Holly and make up a reason to get her to drop by Sierra’s place tonight.

After you passed that message along to the Sanders family, Ms. Holly had been tricked by her parents and went overseas,Robin replied from the driver’s seat. She won’t be able to come back tonight.

John fell silent.

He ran his thumb over the edge of his phone, thought for a moment, then typed out a message.

[Your mom is afraid of thunder. Go sleep beside her later tonight.]

Tommy read the text and didn’t reply.

He could accept his father being hard on him, but he couldn’t accept his father abandoning his mom for someone else, even if that someone his father kept telling him about was very important.

Lakeside Villa,John said. He knew Tommy would listen, so he didn’t send another message.

Yes, sir,Robin answered.

The car sped toward Lakeside Villa.

The thunder along the way grew louder and louder, every crash sounding like it might tear the sky apart. John’s brows frowned, his thumb unconsciously sliding over his phone screen while his gaze rested on the chat window labeled Sierra.

By the time they reached Lakeside Villa, he still hadn’t sent a single word.

Robin opened the door for him. John slipped his phone back into his hand and walked inside, as if the concern he had in the car had been nothing but an illusion.

The moment Pamela saw him, she jumped off the bed and threw herself into his arms, wrapping both arms tightly around his

waist.

You’re finally back! The thunder was so loud just now!

Lie down and sleep. I’ll stay here with you.John quietly pulled himself from her arms.

Pamela hummed in agreement. After she lay back down, she bit her lip, hesitating.

John.

John’s handsome face was as composed as ever. What is it?

Can you lie down and hold me while I sleep? She tugged at his hand, her voice full of expectation. I won’t be so scared if you hold me in your arms.
