The more Charlie thought about it, the angrier he got.

Anna had been a thorn in his eyes for decades, tormenting him every moment. He hated her, yet he could never pull her out.

“Grandfather may never have mentioned her or asked about her all these years, but the butler would still talk about Aunt Anna’s life with him every now and then,” Maxwell said. Unlike his father, he saw things clearly. “If you hurt her daughter, he won’t tolerate it.”

The clause in the agreement that allowed Anna’s children to buy back the shares at the original price was Cyrus‘: way of making up for what he owed her. He never said it out loud because he wanted to save some dignity, but fo his own son to miss something so obvious was another matter entirely.

“Maxwell.” Charlie fixed him with a sharp stare.

Maxwell met Charlie’s eyes; he stood steady, without the slightest trace of fear in his gaze.

“Tell me the truth. Are you trying to help Anna and her daughter?” Charlie’s eyes were sharp as blades, as if he would strike the moment Maxwell admitted it.

Maxwell answered with a question instead. “What do you think?”

Charlie’s expression darkened. “You had better not!”

Maxwell said nothing. No one could tell what he was thinking.

“Show even the slightest bit of mercy for Anna and her daughter, then you can forget about marrying the you love forever,” Charlie warned.

Maxwell’s eyes showed no emotion at all. “Who?”

A flicker of confusion passed through Maxwell’s eyes.

That reaction made Charlie suspicious. Had he guessed it wrongly?

“If there’s nothing else, I’m leaving.” Maxwell stood up and straightened his suit, his usual cold air clinging to him. “I have an early meeting tomorrow.”

“Go then,” Charlie said.

Maxwell nodded and walked out of the study. Just as he reached the door, Charlie called after him again. “Maxwell.

Maxwell turned around. “Is there something else?”

“As long as you manage the company well and keep Sierra and the others from getting those shares, I won’t interfere in your marriage,” Charlie said, testing him. “Even if you want to marry someone nameless, I’ll allow it.”

Maxwell gave him a simple glance, said nothing, and walked away with an unreadable expression.

A minute later, he got into the car.

The moment the door shut, his expression turned ice–cold. His dark eyes were deep and unreadable. After a long silence, he took out his phone and sent Winnie a message.

[There’s someone I need you to investigate.]

After sending that, he pulled up an old photo from his phone. It was an old picture of a girl in a school uniform. He sent that, too.

[I want to know where she is now within a week at the latest.]

Half an hour later, Maxwell arrived home.

After going back and forth on it, he still sent Anna a message. She didn’t see it until the next morning.

[If Sierra wants to buy back the shares you originally held at the original price, then as per the family rules, the one inheriting the shares has to pass an ability test first. You should know that.]

“Mom.” Sierra came downstairs for breakfast and saw Anna staring at her phone. “What are you looking at?”

Anna handed the phone to her.

Sierra read the message carefully. When she finished, her expression barely changed. She asked, “What kind of ability test?”

“They’ll most likely give you a company on the verge of collapse and make you turn it around,” Anna said. She remembered that rule clearly, so she also knew it wasn’t considered deliberate sabotage.

“Is there a time limit?” Sierra asked.

Anna told Sierra everything she knew.

“For others, yes. For you, no. You’re buying back shares that were yours in the first place. They’ll give you the shares when you manage to turn the company around.”
