Sierra took out her phone, made sure she could still open an app and dial a number correctly, then answered, “I’m fine.”
More than ten minutes later, Sierra finished her fourth and fifth glasses. She fought to stay upright, but the alcohol won. She stood up, wobbled, then dropped right back into her seat.
She was truly drunk.
“With a tolerance like this, you’ll be out before the food even gets cold.” Holly helped her up with a sigh.
Sierra garbled, “Then I’ll practice more.”
Holly could only let out a soft, helpless laugh.
She and Nicholas took Sierra home. Compared to earlier, Sierra did a little better this time. She kept forcing herself to stay awake the whole ride back.
The second she got home, she lost consciousness completely and fell fast asleep once she climbed into her own bed.
Seeing that, both Nicholas and Holly felt awful.
“Is she really going to be okay drinking like this?” Nicholas asked, worried.
Holly gently pulled the blanket over Sierra. “Of course not.”
“Then why didn’t you stop her?” Nicholas asked.
“How was I supposed to?” Holly rolled her eyes at him.
“Didn’t you say her real father is the chairman of Lynch Group? He could step in and help her get the shares.” Nicholas did not want Sierra to suffer. “Or we could help her ourselves.”
Holly looked at him with unusual seriousness. “Do you really like Sierra?”
Nicholas answered without even thinking. “Of course I do.”
“Then respect every decision she makes, even if it means suffering.” Holly knew Sierra well, so this time she did not try to stop her. “All we can do is support her as friends.”
Only the things you got with your own hands were truly reliable. A lover, a friend, even family… Any of them could change at any
time.
After everything she had been through, Sierra was scared now. She did not want to rely on anyone else anymore. She wanted to
stand on her own two feet.
Nicholas’s face was full of worry, but after a long while, he finally agreed. “Alright.”
“You head home first,” Holly said as she tucked Sierra in. “I’ll stay here with her tonight.”
Sierra had just gone through a divorce and a breakup. Then right after that, she had to stand on her own. She was carrying a lot in her mind, and Holly was afraid that if she woke up in the middle of the night, she would break down and cry.
A knock sounded at the door, and Anna walked in.
Nicholas and Holly greeted her at the same time. “Anna.”
“There are guest rooms ready on the third floor. You two can sleep upstairs. Leave this to me.” Anna’s voice was always gentle when she spoke to them.
Holly said, “It’s alright. I’ll stay here with her.”

“She’ll most likely sleep until tomorrow morning.” Anna said, “I’ll give her something for the hangover later.”
Holly and Nicholas didn’t argue after she said that.
Sierra woke around five the next morning. She rubbed her head, got up, and went to the bathroom groggily for a shower. By the time she finished and came downstairs, the sky outside was already starting to light up.
Fall had arrived without her realizing it.
