Chapter 513
Around nine that night, Joey finally managed to drop Sierra off at home. Before she got out of the car, his eyes fell on the wooden box in her hands.
“Grandpa told you to put the ring on, but if you ask me, I’d wait until you’ve gotten the shares.”
“What is this thing actually?” Sierra still did not know what the ring was, but judging from Charlie’s and Peter’s reactions, it had to matter.
Joey simply said, “Aunt Anna knows.”
Sierra did not ask anything else. After thanking him again, she got out of the car. Joey tapped the car door twice with his long fingers. Sierra looked back at him, confused.
“Give Aunt Anna my regards.” Joey rested one arm on the open window, his narrow eyes carrying a roguish smile in the dark.” Grandpa asks, cover for me, would you?”
Sierra said nothing. She had wanted to ask why he did not go in himself, but then she remembered that she and her mother ha made their rejection of the King family clear from the start.
Joey probably understood that too.
After watching his car drive away, Sierra carried the small wooden box into her home and went to Anna’s study on the second
floor.
When Anna saw her come home, she set aside whatever she had been doing. The concern in her eyes was plain. “You’re back. Did everything go smoothly?”
“It was alright,” Sierra answered honestly.
“Then they must’ve given you a hard time.” Anna could already guess the general situation from those few words.
Sierra did not hide anything. She told her everything that had happened before and after dinner, then summed it up at the end.
“You were right. There aren’t many decent people in that family. Charlie didn’t openly say anything harsh, but Loren and Vivian worked together the whole time.”
“Charlie likes playing the good person in front of others.” Anna knew him well enough.
“Mom.” Sierra still looked puzzled.
Anna’s gaze softened. “What is it?”
Sierra pressed her lips together. “There’s one person I can’t figure out.”
After hearing the whole story, Anna knew who she meant at once. “Maxwell?”
“Yeah.” Sierra nodded. Even now, she still could not read him. “Joey said he worked with Loren and Charlie to hurt you. But aside from telling me not to ask for the shares, he seemed quite normal when it came to everything else.”
Anna thought it over. According to the reports, Maxwell was cold and decisive, and the company had done well under his leadership over the past few years.
In a way, she would rather he were a decent person.
“For now, just interact with him normally. Don’t get too close to him, don’t trust him, but don’t push him away either.” Anna’s understanding of Maxwell was limited to what she had read in the reports.
When she left Harbor City, Maxwell was only three years old. Afraid she might use the same underhanded methods he did and go after the people he cared about, Charlie had Vivian take Maxwell back with her to her family to raise. Because of that, Auna

knew very little about him.
“Alright,” Sierra said.
