“Of course. If you don’t want to, I won’t force you.” Anna left the choice to Sierra. “I just want you to know that you can have a grandpa too, if you want it.”
“I see,” Sierra said.
There was still a wall in her heart. The gap still existed, but she would think about what her mother had said to her.
“Get some rest early.” Anna patted her head as if she were still a child. “You won’t have any free time left in a few days.”
Sierra bent down and hugged Anna, then nuzzled against her neck. “Mom, I love you.”
Anna was just as gentle with her. “I love you too.”
By the time Sierra went back to her room and finished washing up, it was already past ten.
Sitting on the bed, she took out her phone and sent Tommy a message. She was still worried about him. “Are you asleep yet, sweetheart?”
Tommy immediately jumped out of bed. Without even putting on his slippers, he ran all the way to the study and pushed the door open.
The moment he went in, he saw John sitting in front of the tall window.
John looked so lonely as he stared out into the night, as if he were thinking of someone beyond the mantle of darkness.
“Uncle John,” Tommy called.
John snapped out of his state. When he saw Tommy running around barefooted, he picked the boy up. “Why aren’t you wearing your slippers?”
Tommy did not answer. Instead, he sent Sierra a text message.
[Not yet. Do you want to have a video call?]
It wasn’t long since the message was sent out when Sierra called.
Tommy sat in John’s arms and answered right away. The moment the call connected, he called out sweetly, “Mom!”
John paused while looking for Tommy’s slippers. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of Sierra on the tiny screen in Tommy’s hand. In that instant, the emptiness in his heart seemed to ease a little.
The next second, he remembered what Sierra had said to him.
Don’t appear in front of me again.
While Tommy waved his watch around, John carried him to the couch and set him down. “I’ll go get your slippers.”
Without waiting for a response, John quickly left the study and left Tommy alone in the room.
Tommy was confused.
He could tell something was wrong, but he didn’t ask directly as he was worried about his mom’s feelings. He decided he would talk to John after the call ended.
Sierra had heard what John said. “You’re not wearing your slippers?”
“I ran out and forgot to put them on.” Tommy’s voice was gentle, and his face was as chubby as ever. very good care of myself. I won’t let myself get sick.”
John stood outside the door, listening to them talk. The hollow feeling in his chest only widened

Tommy finished his call with Sierra twenty minutes later. The moment he opened the door, he saw John leaning against the wall. He did not hold back at all and went straight to the point.
“Why did you run just now?”
“Run?” John instantly went back to his usual calm.
“You made an excuse and left the second you heard Mom’s voice.” Tommy glanced at his empty hands. “Weren’t you going to get my slippers? Where are they?”
“In your room,” John answered without missing a beat.
Tommy took two steps closer and raised his face. “What exactly happened between you and Mom?”
“Don’t you already know?” John picked him up and stopped him from walking around barefoot on the floor.
Tommy stared at him but John did not budge.
“It’s just a divorce. Do you really need to avoid even a phone call?” Tommy did not beat around the bush, his expression stern. If you won’t tell me, I’ll tell Mom how you’ve been living here.”
John did not fall for it. “Go ahead.”
Tommy pouted. “I’ll tell Mom that you zone out staring at everything every day, including the dining table, the tall window in the study, the back seat of the car, and every corner of Campanile Estate.”
