Chapter 516
John set him down on the bed when he heard Tommy threatening him again. “Sure, sure.”
Tommy got a little angry. “Dad!”
John paused.
“If you still won’t tell me, I’m really going to get mad,” Tommy rarely threw a tantrum in front of him.
Over the past day or two, Tommy had caught his dad zoning out more times than he could count. Even though John tried his best to act normal around him, Tommy still saw him drift off now and then when he raised his eyes.
He could tell John was thinking about Sierra. He also knew Sierra was still in his heart. But if he liked her, why couldn’t he just admit it and go apologize?
“I’m thinking through a few things.” Seeing how serious he was, John came up with an excuse. “I’ll tell you after I sort them out.

“Really?” Tommy was still just a child, in the end.
John nodded. “Yeah.”
“Pinky swear?”
John did not care about that at all. “Fine.”
“Alright, then. Since you’re being so sincere, I’ll let it go.” Tommy stopped pressing him. Pulling the blanket over himself, he looked at John with his big eyes and said, “I’m a little scared to sleep alone. Can you stay with me?”
John paused, realizing Tommy was worried about him.
What kind of father made his son worry like this?
“Call me Dad, and I’ll consider it.” He teased Tommy like always.
Tommy pulled the blanket over his head. “Suit yourself.”

“Keep the bed warm. I’ll come over after I finish up.” John reached out and pulled the blanket back down.
His heart warmed a little at how Tommy was worried about him, but the hollow emptiness inside him still could not be filled.
Only Sierra could fill that emptiness.
No one else could fill it, not even Tommy.
That night, Tommy slept with John. He knew John wasn’t serious at all about the promise, but he did not call him out on it.
If John did not want to tell him, then it was probably something a child was not supposed to know. In that case, he respected the
adults‘ choice.
Still, if possible, he hoped his parents could get along peacefully, even if they ended up as ex–husband and ex–wife who only nodded in passing, or as friends who had made their peace with each other.
Around six the next morning, Tommy opened his eyes and found no one beside him. He reached out and touched the blanket,
and it was cold.
He sighed, got out of bed, and quietly headed for the master bedroom. Just as his hand touched the doorknob, John’s voice came
from behind him.
“Up this early?”

Tommy turned around.
The moment he saw him, his head filled with questions.
Something wasn’t right.
Shouldn’t he be in the master bedroom at this hour, losing sleep as he stared at all the familiar things around him and missing Sierra?
“Since you’re up, go put on your shoes and come have a jog with me.” John’s expression did not change. His long fingers pinched Tommy’s arm. “You’re so soft. You need exercise.”
“Just a few days ago, Marcus said I was sturdy and built for martial arts.” Tommy was not falling for that. “You can go run if you want. I’m going back to sleep.”
Without waiting for John’s reaction, Tommy turned and headed back to his room.
If Tommy had opened the master bedroom door and gone in at that moment, he would have found the bed still warm. John could only manage two or three hours of rest in places where Sierra had once stayed. Otherwise, he could not sleep at all.
Watching Tommy’s bedroom door close again, John rubbed his tired forehead. Tommy was more observant than he looked.
He looked away, went downstairs, and headed out for a run.
The moment he stepped out the front door, he saw Robin standing there with a serious expression on his face.
After taking in what he was wearing, Robin said sternly, “Sir, you haven’t rested well these past few days. You could die from overwork if you choose to go for a jog right now.”
