Chapter 570
+25 Borut
Sierra blinked after hearing Holly about calling her father instead. That hadn’t even occurred to her.
“Forget it. You probably won’t feel comfortable making that call anyway.” Holly did not care much about things like this. “I’ll call him.”
Holly did exactly that.
A minute later, she sent Sierra a message. [He’ll be there in about forty minutes.]
Sierra had wanted to ask whether this would upset her. But after thinking it over, she realized Holly was someone direct. Pamela’s existence did not really affect her, and Sierra was the one overthinking it.
“You came.” A weak voice came from the person on the hospital bed.
Sierra turned to look, only to see Pamela had opened her eyes, and she looked terrible.
“I’m sorry you had to see me like this.” Pamela sounded drained.
Sierra stayed where she was and waited for Mr. Sanders to arrive. Looking at how fragile Pamela seemed, she could not help asking, “Weren’t you afraid you would really die?”
“I jumped because I wanted to die.” Pamela’s voice was hollow, and her eyes were dull. “But before! jumped, I thought that if I didn’t die, someone would have to deal with me. So I set your number as my emergency contact.”
Sierra frowned. Her chest felt a strange pang after hearing Pamela’s making it sound so casual. “You wanted to die?”
“There’s nothing worth living for anyway.” Pamela truly seemed past caring about anything. “All that is waiting for me is endless trouble from my parents and a life sentence from John’s case.*
“Not necessarily.” Sierra said calmly. “If you pay back the money, you’ll get a few years at most.”
“Oh, Sierra.” Pamela did not seem to care about any of that.
Sierra raised her eyes and looked at her.
Pamela’s eyes were full of loneliness and longing. “Do you know how much I envied you?”
Sierra did not answer.
“Even now, I still remember the first day of university when your parents brought you there. The way they fussed over you and kept reminding you about things was something I never had once in my life.” Pamela spoke slowly. “And that’s not even counting how good your family environment was.”
Sierra waited for her to go on, as she did not feel much when she heard it.
“If I were you, I would have done better than you.” Pamela said it plainly.
“Maybe”
Sierra never made easy judgments about a road she had never walked People always thought wore else’s life would be easier, that the grass would be greener over the other side, but only when they st there themselves would they realize every path had its own hardships
“I’m sorry.” Pamela’s voice was calm.
Sierra raised her eyes slightly.
Pamela seemed strangely at peace. “For all the trouble I caused you, in the past and in the
Sierra said nothing. Some things could not be fixed with a single apology. The bullying and then had hurt her too deeply. At one point, they had almost pushed her into serious psycholog problems.
“But I still envy you.” Pamela was honest about that. “Good parents, good friends, a good husband had all of them. All I ever had was a bottomless pit.”
She hated how unfair the world was. They were both human, so why had her life turned out so much worse than Sierra’s?
“You went after John because you wanted him to save you?” Sierra suddenly understood a few things
“Yes.” Pamela admitted it openly. “Only by finding someone powerful to rely on could I escape my DE ‘control and their endless harassment.”
“But did you ever think that the person who pulls you out of one abyss might drag you into another?” Sierra wanted her to face that truth. “The only person who can truly save you is yourself
