“Don’t get into any more direct clashes with the chairman,” Maxwell said to Charlie. The only reason he had come back was to warn Charlie in case he really pushed Nathan too far. “And don’t drag Aunt Anna or Sierra into this, either.”
Nathan would not care about the usual petty fights they had. But if Anna and Sierra were dragged in, even Maxwell might not be able to save his father. Nathan was a legend among the older generation. With a man like that, there was no telling what methods he might use.
“Are you telling me how to handle things again?” Charlie’s face darkened.
Maxwell did not take the bait. “I’m only giving you a reminder as your son.”
Charlie’s chest rose and fell sharply. Nathan had infuriated him out there, and now Maxwell had come home and done the same. Was he some kind of punching bag?
Seeing the state his father was in, Maxwell knew it was not a good idea to stay any longer. He then ended the conversation. “Get some rest. I am leaving.”
Charlie watched him go.
Just as Maxwell was about to reach the door, Charlie stopped him. “Maxwell.”
Maxwell stopped and looked back with cold eyes.
Charlie stared into Maxwell’s face and asked the question that had been ng him all along. “Is your heart
still with this family?”
Maxwell’s expression did not change; his whole bearing stayed distant and nonchalant. “What do you mean?” “Ever since Sierra and Anna came back, you’ve been staying in touch with them again and again.” Charlie kept his eyes on him. “Are you planning to give them the shares?”
You were the one who asked me to go over this time.” Maxwell’s tone was ice–cold, and there was little emotion in his eyes. “Last time was because of the test. The time before that, Grandpa was the one who asked me to go.”
Hearing that, Charlie opened his mouth to argue, only to realize there was no flaw in Maxwell’s logic. Every time Maxwell had been in contact with Anna and Sierra, it had been for official business and never anything personal.
Even so, Charlie still felt there was something off about Maxwell, and he was certain Maxwell’s loyalty to this family was nowhere near Loren’s.
“Fine.” Charlie forced his emotions down. “Go handle your work,”
Maxwell left.
After thinking it over, Charlie gave Loren a call. There were some things he could not count on Maxwell for, Loren was reliable.

Over the next few days, Sierra’s life had been relatively peaceful. Her body had been pushed hard for two straight months, but it recovered somewhat during the quiet days. After fully reviewing the project details for the city next to Jade City, she headed to work with Marcus.
Before she could even step out the door, someone rushed over.

“Ms. Sierra!” Tony, the bodyguard, looked thrilled. “You’re taking me with you this time, right?”
Ever since he started working here, Marcus had snatched every bit of work away from him. He spent every day in the villa and he was bored out of his mind. The two new bodyguards were so dull, too. His spirit had really become dulled in the past two months!
Lying around and collecting a paycheck was certainly nice, but for someone born to love gossip, being stuck at home was pure torture!
“No.” Marcus answered before Sierra could. “She only needs me.”
“Ms. Sierra…” Tony ignored him and played the pity card on Sierra. He even blinked at her several times.
Sierra looked like she wanted to say something, then stopped.
Taking Tony along was not impossible.
She had originally planned to keep two people by her side, just in case Charlie made a move and Marcus alone could not handle it. But the past two months had been so busy and Marcus had insisted he could manage on his own, so the matter had been put off for the time being.
“Marcus is so boring.” Tony was bright and handsome, and he was funny when he talked. “You need a lively, interesting bodyguard who’s also charming and good with words by your side.”
