Sierra arrived at the Lynch family's estate around six-thirty that evening. Looking at the sharp-eyed old man seated at the head of the table, she asked plainly, "Why did you ask me here, Mr. Lynch?"
If she had been alone, she would not have come at all. The Lynch family might look alright from the outside, but she knew there was a lot of problems inside. But with Marcus and Tony with her, she did not need to be on her guard that much.
"It's nothing serious," Daniel said. He looked even sterner than Cyrus, but this was already as gentle as he could manage. "I just wanted you to come and have dinner with me as we chatted a little."
Sierra did not say much. If this had happened when she first arrived in Harbor City, she might have gotten up and left on the spot. But after everything she had been through, she understood something new. In this circle, even people who disliked each other would still sit down for a meal and a conversation.
Every meal and every word said during every encounter could bring either benefit or problems.
"I know all about your connection to Nathan," Daniel said. "If you don't mind, you can call me grandfather."
"It would not be appropriate," Sierra said, keeping the mood from turning awkward. "Just Danny would be fine, I think."
Daniel relaxed a little. "That works too. Call me whatever you like."
They ate and talked with nothing unpleasant happening the entire time, and no one lost their temper. Just as Daniel had said, it felt like an ordinary family dinner. Only after the meal did Daniel stop her when Sierra said she was leaving.
"Sierra." Daniel started.
She turned to look at him and Daniel asked directly without beating around the bush. "I heard that once you pass your family's test, you will be able to get shares in the King family?"
"Not 'get'," Sierra corrected. "Buy."
Daniel was no longer the man he had been more than twenty years ago. "My mistake."
Sierra did not dwell on it. "What do you really want to ask?"
"The King family is large. Besides your two uncles, there are also the side branches." He looked at her face as he spoke. Sierra looked a lot like Nathan. "If you want those shares, they won't give it up so easily."
The business world was full of schemes. Could someone so young really see through all of it?
There was no way it was only because Nathan's blood ran in her veins.
To put it bluntly, she knew exactly where she stood on the game board. Daniel would never bring up something like this over a relationship that had not even been confirmed by a DNA test, especially not when he was a man who valued benefits above mere sentiment.
"This isn't urgent," Daniel said. He saw her reaction at once and knew she was on guard. "You can go back and think it over. You can also talk it through with your mother."
"There's one thing you got wrong," Sierra said, changing the subject.
Daniel looked confused.
Sierra got straight to the point. "My father is not one of Lynch Group's shareholders."
After that, she exchanged a few polite words with him and left with Tony and Marcus. Only after she disappeared through the front gate did someone suddenly step up beside Daniel and asked in a stern voice.
"Why did you call her here?"
