"John isn't like us." Charlie had interacted with John before and seen it for himself, so he did not agree with Cedric's conclusion. "He really sees Sierra as part of his life."
Cedric let out a quiet laugh. "You're talking about love?"
Charlie did not answer. He knew Cedric would laugh at him if he said it out loud. In their world, profit came first. Most families raised their children to put interests ahead of feelings.
"You saw how much Anna and Nathan loved each other back then, didn't you?" Cedric didn't believe a man in John's position could love someone forever. "They loved each other so much, didn't they? And how did that end?"
Charlie pressed his lips and said nothing. Those two had gone their separate ways. One never married again, while the other left for good.
"Feelings are the most fragile thing in the world." Cedric stirred the coffee in front of him. "John loves Sierra because he hasn't gotten tired of her yet. You know what men are like, don't you?"
Charlie was still thinking.
Cedric went on, "Besides, I heard Sierra was the one who asked for the divorce. The only reason he's still protecting her is probably because he wants to win her back first, then dump her."
Charlie changed the subject. "I heard Daniel took Sierra back to your family's estate for a talk."
Cedric gave a slight nod. "He did."
"You changed the meeting place to here because you wanted to see her," Charlie asked.
"Nathan and my dear brother both plan to give their shares to her. I had to see my competition for myself, right?" Cedric sounded casual and clearly did not take Sierra seriously at all. "Looks like I was worried for nothing."
Their conversation ended there without reaching for a conclusion.
Charlie had wanted Cedric to join forces with him against Sierra and the others, but Cedric thought he was making too much out of nothing.
Before leaving, Cedric even tossed out one last comment. "I can handle Sierra myself. Since the head of the King family is so timid, I won't push it."
For once, Charlie was unusually clearheaded. He did not get angry with Cedric looking down on him. Instead, he went back to talk to Loren about John and Sierra. He needed to know whether he was the one who was wrong… Or Cedric was.
The moment Cedric went downstairs and got into his car, Tony caught sight of it from the corner of his eye. As soon as Sierra finished with her business with the hospital, he told her about it.
"Take Tommy to play for a while," Nathan told Sierra. "I'll handle things over there."
Sierra had not even said anything yet, but Nathan was already walking toward Cedric. Looking at the man who had opposed him countless times since childhood, he said, "What are you doing here, Cedric?"
"I'm here to celebrate your grandson's birthday, of course." Cedric sounded polite and mild. He seemed distant if not courteous, at least on the surface. "Since all of you plan to give your shares to Sierra, then we're family too, in a way."
Nathan raised his eyes. His dark eyes looked deeper than usual. "Don't get any clever ideas."
Cedric raised her eyebrow. "What?"
Nathan reminded him, "You probably don't want to suffer the same loss you did twenty years ago."
The smile disappeared from Cedric's face.
"Don't let the power and connections you worked so hard to rebuild get wiped out all over again." Nathan said calmly. From a distance, the two of them looked just like old friends catching up. "You know better than anyone that I'm very good at destroying people financially."
